Where the Castles cast is now – Disney star, RE teacher and EastEnders romance

We're all familiar with the long-running soaps of today: Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale… But there's another that might spark some nostalgia: the mid-90s TV series Castles.
Following the stories of three generations of a large London family, Castles ran for 24 episodes on BBC One during the summer of 1995.
The soap may bear similarities to ones you know and love, with its writing team having included Peter Whalley – known for his work on Coronation Street.
Repeats and omnibuses aired across BBC One and Two before, eventually, the series was not renewed for a second season.
Here, we take a look at what some of the stars of Castles got up to when the series ended.
John Bowler
John Bowler starred in all 24 episodes of Castles, playing the role of Tony Castle.
He went on to play P.C. Roger Valentine in ITV's The Bill, featuring in a total of 227 episodes of the hugely popular police drama series. He also made guest appearances in various other television shows and British soaps.
After leaving The Bill, he went on to appear as Chief Superintendent Coulson in three series of WPC 56.
John also appeared in an episode of Emmerdale in August 2019.
His wife, Judi Lamb, is an actress, having appeared in Casualty back in the nineties.
Dominic Mafham
Dominic Mafham starred as Matthew Castle, also appearing in all 24 episodes of the soap.
After the show ended, he had many roles in series such as Midsomer Murders, Foyle's War and Doctor Who.
He also gained attraction from his roles in productions including Sniper: Legacy, Father Brown and the HBO/BBC television series Strike – which is based on J.K. Rowling's detective novels.
Dominic is also known for his work on multi-award-winning primetime Sunday night drama The Clinic. The Irish show has been widely praised in the media, having run for seven seasons between 2003 and 2009.
Most recently, Dominic played Polonius in Claire McCarthy's film Ophelia, alongside Naomi Watts, Clive Owen and Tom Felton.
Shakespeare appears to be a favourite of his, with the actor having starred as Antonio in The Merchant of Venice at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, as well as Albany in King Lear.
Marian McLoughlin
Taking on the role of Rachel Castle, Marian McLoughlin was also with the soap for its entire run.
Since, she has been known for her role as Marina Bonnaire in another BBC soap: Doctors. Marian placed the role of Marina for just under a year.
As of this year, she has also been cast as Sue Morgan in Channel 4's Hollyoaks. Marian takes on the role after a recast, with Sue's character returning to the show.
Ray Coulthard
An actor to have not played one of Castles' eponymous characters, Ray Coulthard was known for starring as Stephen Quin.
After the TV show ended, Ray was cast in other series such as Midsomer Murders and Foyle's War, before becoming a series regular on Hotel Babylon, playing James Schofield between 2006 and 2009.
A keen performer, Ray has also acted in many stage productions, particularly in Shakespearean plays. He has worked with the Royal National Theatre and played Duke Vincentio in Measure to Measure from 2011 to 2012.
In addition to work in other soaps, after Castles ended, Ray became a series regular as Lord Miles Edgerton in ITV's Mr. Selfridge.
He is married to Jenna Russell, who played the new Michelle Fowler in EastEnders from 2016 to 2018, replacing Susan Tully.
Harriet Owen
Falling short of one episode, Harriet Owen played Claire Castle for 23 episodes of the soap's career.
Since her work on TV, she has since provided the voice of Wendy's daughter Jane and young Wendy in the 2002 Disney animation, Return to Never Land.
She currently teaches religious education at the Royal Grammar School in Guildford, Surrey and enjoys competing in road bicycle races for Matrix Fitness Pro Cycling in her spare time.
