What Netflix's New Documentary Promises To Reveal About NFL Star, Aaron Hernandez

Aaron Hernandez’s alleged suicide remains a topic of interest among many. In fact, the final years of his life have been subjected to serious analysis, with experts and inside sources coming forth with conspiracy theories and ideas as to what led the former New England Patriot star down a dark path of gang life and murder accusations.

The latest production to bring these questions to the forefront is Netflix’s upcoming documentary, Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. The streaming service just released the first teaser for the documentary, set to be released on Jan. 15, 2020.

Who was Aaron Hernandez?

Hernandez was a stand out tight end from Bristol, Connecticut. He attended college at the University of Florida before deciding to go pro in his senior year. The New England Patriots drafted him in the fourth round in 2010.

Despite his immense talent, trouble always seemed to follow Hernandez. He was cited for failed drug tests but coaches gave him another chance and in 2012, he signed a five-year extension with the Patriots worth $40 million. A year later, he was arrested in connection with the murder of a close friend, Odin Lloyd.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty but mounting evidence against him, as well as two other chargers for a murder in Boston, proved a difficult case. He was found guilty of first-degree murder in April 2015 and sentenced to life without parole. In April of 2017, he was found not guilty of the two additional murders in Boston. A few days later, he was found hanging in his cell and was pronounced dead.

Hernandez allegedly left behind a suicide note to his fiancée that read in part, “Shay, you have always been my soulmate and I want you to live life and know I’m always with you. I told you what was coming indirectly! Tell my story fully but never think anything besides how much I love you. This was the supreme’s, the almighty’s plan, not mine! I love you!”

What will Netflix’s new documentary about Aaron Hernandez reveal?

Netflix posted a teaser for the three-part series to their Twitter account on Dec. 19. The caption for the post read, “From the studio that brought you Making a Murderer and Evil Genius, witness the rise and fall of the infamous athlete Aaron Hernandez. How can someone who had everything throw it all away?”

In the 35-second trailer, a recording of a phone conversation between Hernandez and an unidentified woman is played. “My whole body’s shaking right now,” he tells her. When she asks him what happened, he responds, “You know my temper.”

According to a description from E! News, Hernandez’s fiancee and mother of his daughter, Shayana Jenkins (now Hernandez), is suspicious of the circumstances of Hernandez’s death – despite the medical examiner concluding the 27-year-old’s death was a suicide. The documentary will explore the details of the medical report and highlight Hernandez’s family’s thoughts. It will also look critically into Hernandez’s alleged suicide note and markings of the Bible scripture “John 3:16” that were reportedly written on his head and cell wall.
