Was Miley Cyrus in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'?

When fans think of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Miley Cyrus likely isn’t the first name that comes to mind. But her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth bringing her to the Avengers: Endgame premiere isn’t the only way she’s connected to the MCU. Why was Miley Cyrus in Guardians of the Galaxy 2?

Miley Cyrus began her career as an actor

Cyrus broke out as the star of the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. The show followed her character, Miley Stewart, as she maintained her double life as an ordinary teenager who disguises herself to sing under the titular moniker. The series ran for four seasons (plus a feature film).

Cyrus was cast on the series when she was just 11 years old. Only a few years earlier, she’d decided she wanted to pursue entertainment as a career. “This is what I want to do, daddy,” she told her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, when she was 8 years old (via The Toronto Star). “I want to be an actress.”

She stopped working in film after 1 bad experience

As Hannah Montana wound down, Cyrus aimed her sights on the big screen. “As for her future, I think she’s here for the long run. The sky’s the limit,” said Peter Chelsom, who directed her in Hannah Montana: The Movie. From there, she starred in The Last SongLOL, and So Undercover.

But the latter experience turned her off from making films. “I thought after my show I was gonna act,” she said in a 2013 MTV documentary (via E! News). “I did one movie and I came back and said, ‘I’m never doing that again. I’m going to do music for the rest of my life.’”

What was Miley Cyrus’ role in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’?

True to her word, So Undercover was Cyrus’ last starring film role to date. She’s cameoed in movies like The Night Before and A Very Murray Christmas. And she starred in the Amazon Prime Video miniseries Crisis in Six Scenes, as well as an episode of Black Mirror. But Cyrus’s return to the big screen still surprised many.

In Miley Cyrus’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 scene, she voiced the robot Mainframe. Hers is one of five mid-credits scenes, and she only has one line of dialogue: “I missed you guys so much!” Still, the cameo made such waves that director James Gunn addressed it.

How did Cyrus earn Gunn’s attention? Her judge gig on The Voice. “I was admiring the tone of Miley Cyrus’s voice,” he told BuzzFeed News. “I was like, I think she would be a funny person to have as a voice. So we contacted her, and she said yes. She came in and recorded, and she was a delight to work with.”

Will she reprise her role in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’?

Lately, Cyrus remains focused on her music. She’s also jumped by behind the camera, directing the music video for her first Plastic Hearts single, “Midnight Sky.” And she isn’t opposed to returning to the small screen. “I’m always looking for scripts that are telling a story that I think are really interesting or also relatable, and I see myself in the character,” she said in a 2020 iHeartRadio video.

As for Miley Cyrus in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn said, ‘There’s a chance that character may go on and become a bigger thing.” He added, “I’m excited by the possibility of doing more stuff with that particular set of characters.” However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 isn’t due out until 2023.
