‘Vampire Diaries’ star Nina Dobrev: I ‘despised’ onscreen lover Paul Wesley

Don’t let Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley’s chemistry on “The Vampire Diaries” fool you.

The duo, who played on-again, off-again lovers Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore onscreen, actually “despised” each other in real life during the early days of filming the CW series.

“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley,” Dobrev, 30, said Monday on the “Directionally Challenged” podcast, hosted by her fellow “Vampire Diaries” co-stars Candice King and Kayla Ewell.

She continued: “We really just didn’t get along the first maybe five months of shooting.”

Dobrev said that her and Wesley’s onscreen connection was so convincing that many people speculated that their relationship carried over off-set.

“I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?'” she recalled. “Because everyone thought that we had such good chemistry.”

What viewers really saw was “a fine line between love and hate.” Dobrev said, “We despised each other so much, that it read as love.”

Despite a rocky start, Dobrev and Wesley are now the best of friends.

“We ended up getting to a good place and it was fine. Of everyone, I think I probably see him the most and hang out with him the most. We’re probably the closest,” Dobrev said.

She continued: “It’s so funny how time changes everything because I never thought he would be one of my best friends.”

Just last month, Dobrev posted a black-and-white Instagram picture with Wesley. “Excuse me sir, you look familiar. I feel like we’ve met before. Maybe in a past life?” she captioned the image.
