Tom Hardy looks unrecognisable after drag transformation in bizarre scenes from gritty Al Capone movie

TOM Hardy looks unrecognisable after a drag transformation in bizarre scenes from his gritty new Al Capone movie.

The 42-year-old British actor plays the notorious American gangster in the new film which documents a year of his life towards the end of his days.

Capone was released from prison in 1939 after serving almost eight years of his 11 year sentence for tax evasion.

While in prison, he was diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhoea and by the end of his jail term he was extremely confused and disorientated.

The film follows Capone's life under house arrest in Florida after his release, and his battle with neurosyphilis.

The mobster not only suffers harrowing flashbacks to his life of crime, but in bizarre scenes, dresses up in drag, complete with head scarf.

In another scene, Capone is driving a car alongside Matt Dillon's character wearing feminine cats eye sunglasses, a patterned neck scarf and a women's wide brilled black hat.

Even when he isn't in drag, handsome Tom is unrecognisable as Capone, who is red eyed and looks 20 years older than a man in his late 40s.

He swaps his cigar for a carrot at one point, and soils himself leading to him wearing dressing gowns and adult nappies around his home.

The film is directed by Josh Trank but the first reviews have been mixed.

A number of critics praised Tom' performance, saying it is a "career-best" and "worth the price of admission", others felt it offered nothing new on the bizarre life of the infamous Capone.

Chicago Sun-Times critic Richard Roeper, issued one of the harshest critiques, writing: '"Capone" is a noxious film about a noxious man – a gruesome and grotesque viewing experience that tells us nothing new about Capone while rubbing our noses in one detestable scene after another."

Capone is available to rent via VOD from today with a cinematic release planned for later in the year.
