The Witcher author mocks Game of Thrones over Ed Sheeran's cameo – as Netflix show becomes most popular series of 2019
THE Witcher author has mocked Game of Thrones over its Ed Sheeran's cameo – as the Netflix show becomes the most popular series of 2019.
The Henry Cavill-led show premiered on Netflix earlier this month amid claims it is 'the next Game of Thrones'.
But author Andrzej Sapkowski, who wrote the books on which the TV series is based, believes the two dramas are very different.
And during a Comic Con event in Warsaw, Poland last year, Andrzej joked: "I believe that my job as a creative consultant for this series is to make sure that at NO point in the show [will] Ed Sheeran sing. "And that I will make sure doesn’t happen. I will make sure.”
GoT fans will remember the Shape of You singer had an extended cameo as a Lannister soldier during its seventh season.
Ed, 28, sang by a campfire alongside his fellow soldiers and Arya Stark, but many viewers found his scene too distracting.
It isn't the first time top names from The Witcher – which Netflix revealed was it's most popular series of 2019 yesterday – have shot down any comparisons with Game of Thrones.
Earlier this month, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and fellow producer Tomasz Baginski insisted The Witcher "is something else" entirely from the HBO smash hit, which came to an end in May after eight seasons.
Lauren told Digital Spy: "I think what people are saying: 'Can you be as successful and popular as Game of Thrones?' God, we hope so! I mean, why wouldn't you want that?
“To me, I think that Game of Thrones has kicked open a lot of doors for fantasy on television. I think fantasy used to be seen as for a very niche audience, mostly male, mostly geeks and nerd – that's who fantasy was for.
"And Game of Thrones said, 'No, anyone can find themselves in fantasy'. Because, when done correctly, fantasy is a reflection of our real world."
Tomasz added: "At the same time, The Witcher is very different. It's so different.
"Yes, Game of Thrones was absolutely amazing. It's amazing to watch, and a great TV show.
“But we're doing The Witcher. It's something else. There is not really a comparison."
The Witcher is available now on Netflix.
