The Underground Railroad is due to air on Amazon Prime Video on May 14 and the limited TV series is set during an alternate timeline. The railroad provides a way out for enslaved African-Americans during the 1800s, as they fight for freedom. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about who is in the cast of The Underground Railroad.

Who is in The Underground Railroad?

Cora Randall – Thuso Mbedu

Cora is the main protagonist who was born on The Randall plantation in Georgia.

She is a brave and defiant character who shows signs of resistance as part of her dream of a free life in the north.

Cora is played by Thuso Mbedu, a 29-year-old South African actress known for her roles in Is’Thunzi and Scandal!

The star is on Instagram and she has shared plenty of updates, including her thoughts on working with director Barry Jenkins.

She said: “Working with Barry was amazing. It was one of the easiest things I’ve done. He makes easy it, man.

“It’s like having a conversation- an easy, flowing, unforced conversation. He fostered and encouraged an environment where we (as a collective) could “finish off each other’s thoughts/sentences” because he was so clear and articulate and receptive.”

Homer – Chase W Dillon

Homer is a young boy who is part of the Ridgeway gang in the books.

Even though he bought his freedom, he decided to remain a part of the group.

Cora is confused at why Homer shows no sense of solidarity when it comes to the rights of black people.

He is played by Chase W Dillon, a child actor known for his roles in The First Wives Club and Little America.

He has a social media presence and shared a photo of himself standing in front of a giant poster for the series.

Caesar – Aaron Pierre

Caesar is a slave on the Randall plantation and he asks Cora to escape with him.

In the original book, he gets into trouble for going under the radar with Cora and he suffers the consequences.

He is played by Aaron Pierre, an actor who has previously starred in Prime Suspect 1973, Britannia and The A Word.

His latest roles include Krypton and a project called Old.

The star is on Instagram and he has been sharing photos of his character in The Underground Railroad.

He said: “Really excited to be part of this very special project with such a brilliant team!”

Ridgeway – Joel Edgerton

Arnold Ridgeway is a slave catcher in the books and he was the son of a blacksmith.

He believed white people had the right to enslave black people in order to colonize America.

His character is played by Joel Edgerton, a 46-year-old Australian actor known for his roles in Star Wars and King Arthur.

The award-winning actor has also starred in The Great Gatsby, The Secret Life of Us and Animal Kingdom.

Fans are looking forward to seeing the star in his latest venture.

Recurring characters include Justice Leak as James Randall, Damon Herriman as Martin and William Jackson Harper as Royal.

A trailer for the upcoming series has been released and Caesar is heard saying: “There is nothing here but suffering”.

He adds: “It is time to go,” as he encourages Cora to run away with him.

Fans have shared their thoughts on the upcoming series, with one saying: “This has to be one of the best trailers I have seen in a long time. The acting, visuals, production, cinematography look absolutely perfect.”
