Netflix UK dropped The Sinner season three recently for viewers to binge. The USA Network crime drama saw Harry Ambrose (played by Bill Pullman) taking on a new case which pushed him to the edge of his sanity. Ambrose’s investigations saw him gazing into a Nietzschean abyss as his confronted his own existentialism, triggered by his chief suspect and serial killer Jamie Burns (Matt Bomer).
Were Nick and Jamie in a relationship in The Sinner season 3?

The show focused on the twisted relationship between Jamie and his old college friend Nick Haas (Chris Messina).
They reunited after many years apart when Jamie called on his estranged friend to reconnect after he was plunged into crisis amid his impending fatherhood.
Nick seemed to trigger something inside Jamie, which made the teacher contemplate his suburban life and lead him to want to leave it all behind.

Over the course of the season, audiences learnt more about the friendship between the two of them after Nick and Jamie struck up a friendship during their philosophy seminars at college.
Nick seemed to take Jamie under his wing, even staying with his friend during the holidays when everyone else went home to their families.
They started to delve further in the teachings of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche before putting themselves through a series of endurance challenges as they reached out to touch the void.
Among the challenges, they often jumped off the edge of bridges in the middle of the night and buried each other in graves to experience death and push them to the edge of existence.
At one point though, it all got too much for Jamie who ended their friendship and walked away from Nick – only to call on him years down the line.
Early on, it was alluded something sexual had taken place between the two men.
Jamie seemed to admit as much when he was confronted by his wife Leela (Parisa Fitz-Henley) about the matter.
While they may have only experimented once, there was a deep bond between the two men which couldn’t be quantified or qualified neatly.
Their connection even seemed to surpass death with Nick haunting Jamie and goading him into committing terrible acts in hallucinations from beyond the grave.
Speaking to Variety about the connection between the two men, Bomer said: “It was a relationship that soothed a really profound sense of spiritual loneliness.
“It transcended friendship. It was a soulmate connection, but not in a sexual way.
“I think to speak of it in sexual terms, though they did have a shared brief sexual history, would be reductive.

“It was really more about two people whose self-prescribed ethics soothed a wound that they both had.”
He added: “So there was a certain sense of loneliness that could only be relieved in the company of each other.”
From Bomer’s words, it sounded like the sexual element of Nick and Jamie’s relationship is just one facet.
The White Collar and American Horror Story actor said he was originally drawn to the story due to its exploration of trauma.
He went on to say season three focused on the dangers of repressed trauma and how it could fester and manifest.
Bomer suggested the trauma Jamie experienced ran deep into his psyche and affected him psychologically.
