The New 'Avengers: Endgame' Super Bowl Spot Has Aired
The Super Bowl usually brings with it a lot of exciting ads, and 2019 was no exception. Half-time is a good time for commercials, but the best ones are typically scattered throughout, with some even airing before the game begins. For Super Bowl LIII (that’s 53, for those not familiar with Roman numerals), one of the most anticipated moments came before kick-off, when a new promotion for the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Endgame aired. Here’s what the spot revealed about the flick:
The Russo Brothers teased the clip
Approximately 25 minutes before it aired, the directors of the films, Joe and Anthony Russo, tweeted a not-so-mysterious message:
Fans were quick to catch on that this meant there was new Avengers: Endgame content headed their way. This had been previously teased by numerous media outlets.
The first Avengers: Endgame trailer
Before we look at the new spot, a refresher: The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame showed a lot more, and it was a lot darker. Tony Stark (Iron Man) was stuck in space, awaiting certain death. Meanwhile, his friends on Earth, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), Bruce Banner (the Hulk) and Steve Rogers (Captain America) lamented the loss of their friends, taking stock of who was unaccounted for, and trying to figure out what to do next. Natasha sees her old friend, Clint Barton (formerly Hawkeye) in his new persona as Ronin, and Scott Lang (Ant-Man) surprises everyone by showing up at headquarters when he was believed to be among those who disappeared.
A 30-second spot
The brief ad begins with a black, silver, and red 10-year anniversary logo fading away into dust. This is followed by hazy blue images of New York City, and then it cuts to Steve sitting in a room with several other people, as well as a poster that marks the time since Thanos’ snap, which reads, “Where do we go, now that they’re gone?” In a voiceover, Tony says, “Some people move on…” and Steve finishes his thought, saying, “But not us.”
This is followed by rapid shots of the Avengers who didn’t vanish: Tony and Nebula working with power tools; Natasha, Steve, Bruce, and Jim Rhodes (War Machine) walking near a stadium at night; Rocket Racoon what appears to be the door of the hut where Bucky Barnes (formerly the Winter Soldier, now White Wolf) was leaving in Wakanda; Natasha firing a gun as a target, Scott and Jim suiting up; Thor looking at the wreckage of Asgard; Clint looking up; and Steve, once again, strapping on his Captain America shield.
Finally, all of the aforementioned are shown walking through Avengers headquarters in a single file line, as Tony completes the voiceover, echoing, “Not us.” Cut to black, and purple (for Thanos) letters spell out “April” (the “A” is the Avengers symbol) announcing the month of the film’s arrival.
What does it all mean?
This is a pretty straightforward trailer, but we can dissect it a bit more. Clearly, these are the heroes who will be taking center stage, and they’re going to figure out how to reverse the effects of Thanos’ snap from Avengers: Infinity War — or die trying. There isn’t really any new information here, but it is exciting to see them all come together.
