The Major Change 'The Pioneer Woman' Ree Drummond Made When She Married Husband Ladd Drummond

The Food Network has charmed fans for years with its delightful culinary shows, and we’ve been watching Ree Drummond for years. Her show, The Pioneer Woman, showcases her no-fuss recipes while she also shares stories of her husband, kids, and life on the ranch. As Ree says, she’s an “accidental country girl” who chose her life in Oklahoma over the city all to be with her husband, Ladd. And there’s no doubt the two are endlessly devoted to each other.

Ree’s living situation wasn’t the only sacrifice she made when she married Ladd. It turns out she gave something else up, too — and it probably helped her career along the way. Here’s the major change she made.

Ree was a vegetarian when she lived in Los Angeles

First photo, I'm happily cooking on the new season of my @foodnetwork show, which premieres Saturday morning at 10 Eastern/9 Central! Second photo, I kind of look like Mary Katherine Gallagher from SNL ("Sometimes…when I get nervous…) Third photo, we're back on message! It's the "Healthyish" fruity ice cream I'm making on Saturday's show, and you're gonna love it. Here's to a new season, a bunch of fun new shows, and ice cream that won't fill you with guilt. Who the heck needs that? See ya on the teevee!

It’s hard to believe Ree ever lived the big-city life, but when she was in her younger years, she had dreams of leaving her country childhood behind and pursuing the city dream. On her blog, she explained that while she was in college in Los Angeles, she wanted to identify as a vegetarian. “I had left the relative calm of the Midwest months earlier to attend college in Los Angeles, which was, like, so ‘it.’ Calling myself a VEGETARIAN just seemed to fit, so I really took it and ran,” she wrote. Ree also noted that she had no aversion to meat, so she’s not sure why she did it other than to perhaps look cool and interesting amongst her peers.

Ree did have a moment of weakness, though. While she loved being able to identify as a person who didn’t eat meat, she broke when she drove near a Jack-in-the-Box. “I finally zeroed in on the one item I knew I had to order: The Sourdough Bacon Cheeseburger,” she wrote. And while she enjoyed every second of eating the meat product, she couldn’t commit to eating meat again. “So I quickly and quietly threw away the white paper Jack-in-the-Box wrapper and resolved to pretend the whole sordid thing had never, ever happened.”

Ladd is a meat-and-potatoes type of man

Ree’s life completely changed when she met Ladd. Country Living reminds us the two first crossed paths when Ree was visiting home after living in Los Angeles, and she couldn’t wait to get away from her small town and move to Chicago, her next destination. She met Ladd in a dive bar though, and after he called her to go on a date, the two quickly fell in love. It’s all history from here, as we know Ree chose to stay in Oklahoma to marry Ladd, live on her ranch, and raise her family of four children.

With life changes came dietary changes, too. The vegetarian facade Ree put on during her college years was easily disrupted with Ladd’s foods of choice. People reports he’s entirely a meat-and-potatoes type of cowboy, and he can be quite a picky eater. And Ree has also said that when Ladd cooked her a “steak sizzling in butter,” her old veggie ways were out the window.

It seems ironic that Ree went through such a long period of time being a vegetarian when we see her cook meat so often now — and her first blog post regarding food was even about steak. MSN reports a writer for PopSugar talked to Ree about the post that she added to her blog back in 2007. As Ree said, “I can confirm that ‘How to Cook a Steak‘ was my first cooking post ever. However, it didn’t really go viral – it just slowly brought in more readers over time!”

While her excellent post about cooking steak may not have been an instant success, there’s no doubt she has some good tips. And she also added her own witty commentary at the end that we love hearing on The Pioneer Woman today. She wrote on her blog, “If you cook it for your boyfriend, he will propose to you. If you cook it for your girlfriend, she will give you a ninety-minute foot rub. … If you cook it for your friends, they’ll never invite you over to their house for dinner again. You will have permanently raised the bar.”
