The latest episodes of the hit Hulu show continues on from the shocking season three finale, which saw fearless leader June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) shot in the woods and rescued by her fellow handmaidens. However, it is the character Rita who has surprised viewers the most, as she struggles to adapt to life in Canada.

In the season three finale, titled Mayday, June was able to rescue a plane full of Gilead children, along with friend Rita.

In season four, Rita struggles to her new life in Canada, and expresses a desire to return to Gilead.

She later has a reunion with her former masters, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).

Serena Joy reveals she is pregnant and Rita gives Fred an ultrasound scan, confirming that it is a boy.

Actress Amanda Brugel spoke to Elle.com about her character, as well as her hopes for Rita’s future.

After learning of Serena Joy’s pregnancy, Amanda said: “I’m hoping truly that Serena Joy’s son gets taken away from her, and then I get it.

“Because Serena Joy and everything they did with Gilead took my son away—we find that out in season two. So, an eye for an eye.

“I’m not going to take her son, but I won’t say no if I have a baby to raise, because again, that would give Rita purpose.

“It would give her a child back that was taken from her. Also, I would totally take the baby to go and visit its mom in jail. That’s really where I want to see her end up in season five,” she stated.

Rita is wrestling as to what to do with herself now that she is alone in Canada.

The actor told Elle that she thinks “Rita is grateful to be free and in Canada”.

However, Amanda said that she made it her mission to portray Rita as if she missed Gilead.

Struggling to adapt to her new life, she misses the routine and the structure,” Amanda says.

Upon arriving in Canada, she is alone with no family, and she’s by herself and has no purpose every day.”

Could this all change for Rita if Serena Joy is unable to keep the baby as she is on trial?

In the latest episode, Milk, Rita quietly revelled in the opportunity to finally stand up against Commander Waterford, despite his attempts to wriggle his way back into her life.

Rita proves freedom is changing her as she refuses to be manipulated any longer, with Amanda adding Rita asserted herself with “strength and gravitas” during the scene.

While Rita appears to be happy about Serena Joy’s pregnancy, it is clear that she won’t fall in with the heinous couple again.

Amanda also discussed the possibility that fans might learn more of Rita’s backstory soon, but she was unsure exactly when.

Amanda continued by saying Rita is “almost a chameleon” as she is a heartwarming character yet has some bite.

She concluded by saying she hopes viewers will learn more about Rita and that she has many questions about her, and she “wants them answered”.

“I think now she’s earned it.”
