The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: Aunt Lydia to undergo huge change as past character returns?

The Handmaid’s Tale has not been shy about making characters seem overtly righteous or sadistic. One of the most complex characters so far has been Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd). The terrifying matriarch has struck fear into the hearts of the handmaids since episode one of the show, and has continued to show off her brutality well into season three. But her dedicated backstory episode this season also showed a piece of her lighter side.

During her episode Aunt Lydia fans saw the reason behind some of her hatred.

After being rejected by someone she was interested in, she decided to take some of her anger out on a young mother, Noelle (Emily Althaus), and get her son, Ryan (Ian Ho), taken away from her.

This was quite a disturbing move, as Aunt Lydia had been extremely nice and welcoming up until that point in the episode.

It certainly showed off exactly how unforgiving she can be when required.

However fans of the show have begun looking deeper into Lydia’s backstory since the release of The Handmaid’s Tale’s sequel, The Testaments.

In The Testaments Aunt Lydia is one of the protagonists.

As the narrator and main focus of the book, viewers of the show have been expecting her to take a larger seat in the upcoming fourth season of the Hulu show.

But, with this in mind, Reddit user bio_hazzard_flirt suggested Noelle could return to the show in season four.

They wrote: “Next season I hope to see this girl come back in more Aunt Lydia Flashbacks as one of Lydia’s Handmaids.”

While Lydia has been inarguably horrendous to all of the handmaids throughout the show so far, she may still feel some guilt about how she treated Noelle before the rise of Gilead.

If she does, could Aunt Lydia be shown turning over a new leaf, and looking to save Noelle in the best way she can?

This would be a huge change-up for the character, and would certainly begin leading her into the person she becomes for The Testaments, which may indeed become part of the Hulu show.

However, other viewers didn’t wish that horrendous fate onto Noelle, as one merely commented on the post: “I don’t. I hope the poor thing made it to Canada.”

Meanwhile, viewers have recently been theorising that June (Elisabeth Moss) will be killed off in season four.

One pessimistic viewer wrote: “I feel like June will die.

“Honestly I do. I feel that June will die in taking down Gilead. She will get Hannah home to Luke and Nick will get out to Holly.”

The viewer then suggested these two characters would be eager to raise their daughters after being apart from them for so long.

“The two men will raise their daughters close to their sisters and in their mother image.

“I really do feel like that is the happy ending. Or as close to a happy ending as we will get.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season three is available on Hulu and All4.
