The Grand Tour season 4: Richard Hammond almost caught sepsis filming special episode
While filming the special titled The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen, the trio were faced with incredibly rough conditions for their latest challenge. The special sees the three hosts ditch the cars for three very different boats, all before setting sail across the Mekong River and the Tonlé Sap. However, things became incredibly tough for the trio after brutal weather conditions forced them to stop filming several times and almost left Richard Hammond with sepsis.
Following the release of the fourth outing, Richard Hammond, who presents the show alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May spoke out about how his own voyage across southeast Asia almost ended badly.
Speaking to inews.co.uk, he revealed he got an infection during the boat trip after wearing rubber sandals.
He said: “I was wearing rubber sandals on the boat in Cambodia and an infection got rubbed in.
“I had bright red track lines up my shins.”

Hammond recalls the doctor having to act fast, as the infection could have left him in a life-threatening condition.
“The doctor said we had to stop it in its tracks because if it gets into your major arteries it can cause sepsis and it will kill you,” he recalls.
However, luckily for Hammond the situation was far less severe than anticipated.
The infection was diagnosed as a case of cellulitis and Hammond was left walking with “very sore old lady ankles”.
This wasn’t the only miserable part of the shoot as his Miami Vice-style motorboat was hit by a monsoon, separating him from his compadres.
“It was very unpleasant,” he said.
“We are fully aware that just because you’re doing something for telly, things can go wrong.
“But people don’t want to see us just sitting on a sofa drinking a G&T.”

Meanwhile, Richard has since announced he will be taking a step away from the car-mad trio and embarking on his own separate venture.
Recently, news dropped that Hammond is branching out with a new Amazon series of his own.
The new series will see him shipwrecked on a deserted island with Tory Belleci, the US presenter of MythBusters.
The pair have to use their engineering and science skills to construct objects to survive on the island, from vehicles to waterwheels.
