The Chase: Fans slam contestant for taking minus £4,000 offer ‘Doesn’t deserve the money’
Viewers of ITV game show The Chase were annoyed by one player’s decision today (January 20), as they sacrificed the chance to win big money in an overly-cautious strategy. Fans vented their anger on social media, saying the players “deserve to get caught”.
One player ignited the fury of armchair gamers during tonight’s episode of The Chase.
The four players hoping to pocket Bradley Walsh’s cash had been whittled down to two in the first round, with two contestants caught by The Vixen, AKA Jenny Ryan, as they attempted to bank cash.
Gemma was the last player to face The Chaser, and she had accumulated £6,000 in her general knowledge round, ready to be added to the existing pot of £24,000.
Gemma was then offered a low offer of -£4,000, £6,000 or £56,000 – an offer which caused her anguish.

When she consulted her remaining teammate James, who had bagged the £24,000, he offered his support: “£56,000 is a lot of money, but if you want to take the minus £4,000, I’ll understand. And I want another brain in the final chase.”
Gemma admitted that she had never wanted to be the player who accepted a minus offer: “I said I always was going to be the person who would not take the minus, but I’m going to go minus. James, I hope that’s ok.”
James agreed and Jenny Ryan concurred with Gemma’s tactics: “Absolutely agree. The right decision.”
However, fans didn’t concur with James and Jenny’s backing for Gemma.
One viewer said on Twitter: “It infuriates me when contestants take the minus offer on The Chase. You deserve to get caught if you take the minus offer and take away someone else’s well-earned money.”
Another commented: “As the audience clap Gemma and her minus figure, her team mate James sits absolutely still. Meanwhile viewers around the country are going absolutely ape.”
One viewer thought that few would agree with Gemma’s decision: “I’m not going to look, but I suspect that the only three people in the country who agree with Gemma taking the minus offer are James, Brad and The Chaser.”
Some felt that Gemma wasn’t doing enough to help James with her decision: “Gemma letting down James”.

Someone else stated that anyone who accepts a minus offer shouldn’t be allowed any of the winnings: “Anyone who takes a minus offer doesn’t deserve the money the other player earned I don’t care what anyone says!!”
There was even a bizarre – and sarcastic – conspiracy theory that James actively participated in losing to spite Gemma.
One user posted: “James clearly threw the game on principle.”
But not everyone was so damning of Gemma’s cautious tactics.

One fan posted on Twitter: “It’s totally the right decision. You forget #TheChase is a game, not a moral challenge. Do whatever it takes to win.”
James, who participated in the show, has given his view of his team’s performance in a post on Twitter and he doesn’t pick on Gemma or her decision.
In the post, he said: “SPOILER ALERT in case you haven’t seen #thechase today. I think Jenny summed it up well, I needed a strong team around me. In the second half of the final chase I totally lost momentum and missed lots of easy questions.”
The Chase continues on ITV tomorrow at 5pm.
