The Big Bang Theory plot hole: Did you spot huge Sheldon Cooper father blunder?

CBS comedy series The Big Bang Theory may be over but this hasn’t stopped fans from poring over re-runs and finding continuity errors. Unsurprisingly, the show has seen some blunders during its time with characters disappearing and storylines being discontinued to Sheldon Cooper’s (played by Jim Parsons) inconsistent drinking habits. There’s one big continuity error which continues to perplex people thanks to prequel series Young Sheldon.

The one big error fans have spotted concerns Sheldon’s father George Cooper Snr (Lance Barber) in Young Sheldon.

Sheldon’s relationship with his father was full of conflict with George Snr trying to get his son interested in things like football and to cook meat.

His father also taught him archery in a bid to interest Sheldon in something other than science.

In The Big Bang Theory, George Snr is dead and the implication is his demise was due to weight-related health issues caused by his mother’s cooking.

But it’s not their fractious dynamic which has left viewers confused, it’s the casting of Barber in the role as Sheldon’s father.

Actor Barber previously appeared in The Big Bang Theory back in season five episode The Speckerman Recurrence in a very different role.

The star was playing Jimmy Speckerman, who bullied Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) at high school.

Leonard and Jimmy were reunited in the episode, much to the former’s discomfort.

Barber was later cast in the role of the idiosyncratic scientist in prequel series Young Sheldon.

Even when the show first launched in 2017, some fans of the show noticed the inconsistency.

Some even joked the inconsistency was a glitch in the time-space continuum, which allowed the same person to be Leonard’s high school bully and Sheldon’s late father.

Interestingly, actress Zoe Parry – who plays Sheldon’s mother in the prequel series – is the daughter of Laurie Metcalfe, who is an older version of the character in The Big Bang Theory.

Speaking about going for the part on Young Sheldon, Barber told Mashable India previously: “I walked out of that audition feeling hopeful and excited about the prospects. And luckily here we are.

“Also, luckily, I had a history with show creator Chuck Lorre. I had done a Big Bang Theory episode before and even tested for a show called Mike and Molly.”

Speaking about the difference in Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory to the prequel series, Barber explained: “It was certainly a work in progress since season one.

“There were some things established in The Big Bang Theory, but they were in a different context and tone.

“The Sheldon that narrates our show turns out to be an older, wiser Sheldon than the one in TBBT.

“And his perspective on his family when he is with his friends on TBBT is perhaps different than the one narrating Young Sheldon.

“He sees his father as a different person, as a human for the first time.

“The writers were able to really humanise more than he was on TBBT, which is important, I think, because we want to like and root for these characters.

“And it would be tough to do that if George was a cartoonish redneck alcoholic, you know?”

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Netflix now.
