The Best Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen Movies

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were household names back in the ’90s. Their role as Michelle Tanner on the hit television series Full House cemented them in Hollywood at an unusually young age. The twins were on the show for its entire duration, playing the adorable Tanner from 1987 to 1995. That means they started when they were just a year old.

With Tanner being such a popular character and the girls being naturals on screen it’s no surprise the Olsen twins starred side-by-side in several films. Eventually they completely put acting behind them, disappointing die-hard fans everywhere. At least we can still reminisce with some of their best films.

5. ‘Winning London’

Winning London was one of their most realistic films, so much so that it inspired many girls to join (or want to join) the Model UN. The film follows two sisters as they travel to London to compete, but the country they intended to enter with is taken! Hysteria ensues as the girls run around learning everything they possibly can about the country they need to represent, the UK. There’s sightseeing, shopping, and boys — an ingredient list that makes it way into many of their films. There’s also kidnapping and other shenanigans afoot. The icing on the cake was all the Harry Potter references. How could you not appreciate them?

4. ‘Holiday in the Sun”

Looking at this film through a “teen lens,” Madison and Alex Stewart had everything I could have possibly wanted. The girls take a trip on a private jet to the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas and get to do a ton of fun things. They play with dolphins, hang-glide, enjoy waterslides, ride mopeds, and hunt for boys. The movie has a pretty memorable soundtrack too (Weezer I’m looking at you). Our Lips are Sealed almost made fourth since they both embody teenage fantasies to the fullest. Our Lips are Sealed has a crazy plotline where the girls are in witness protection, but I think the montages and iconic music won me over.

Fun Fact: Transformers, Megan Fox makes an appearance as the catty heiress to a department store, which is ironic considering she used to shoplift.

3. ‘Billboard Dad’

Billboard Dad is one of the most underrated films the Olsen’s have put out! The twins basically move mountains to make their dad happy, and it’s the sweetest thing ever. To help get their widowed struggling artist father out of a slump, Tess (Mary-Kate) and Emily (Ashley) paint an ad on a billboard to get him a girlfriend. Somehow, this larger than life gesture works — they manage to attract the perfect woman for their dad. While her son is less than pleasant, it all works out in the end on both the relationship front and the struggling artist front.

Fun fact: Troian Bellisario who stars in Pretty Little Liars, a series we were sad to see go this year, is the girls’ diving teammate.

2. ‘Double, Double, Toil and Trouble’

In 1993 the Olsen Twins blessed us with an adorable Halloween flick. Despite being super young, the twins took us on quite a journey. We carved pumpkins, broke spells, solved mysteries, laughed at hidden Full House references behind the “fourth wall,” and freed Aunt Sophia from certain doom. Being the most surreal Mary-Kate and Ashley movie, it would have been a shame not to include it on the list! While they weren’t in their acting prime just yet the twins created an unforgettable experience in Double, Double, Toil and Trouble.

Fun fact: In case you forgot, Cloris Leachman, one of the oldest dancers on Dancing With The Stars, played Aunt Agatha AND Aunt Sophia

1. ‘It Takes Two’

Surprised to see It Takes Two as number one? You shouldn’t be! Honestly, it’s the only film that I didn’t need a refresher on to fully recall despite being just as young as the twins when it came out. Even though it’s one of their earlier films, it’s one of the most memorable. The twins even won a Teen Choice Award for their roles!

The film takes the classic Parent Trap gimmick (It Takes Two came out first by the way) and tells a heartwarming and hilarious story of two very different girls who happen to look alike but aren’t related. Alyssa, a rich girl, and Amanda, an orphan, meet halfway between Alyssa’s summer home and Amanda’s camp. Once it comes to light that Alyssa’s father, Roger, is marrying the worst woman ever they trade places to get rid of her. The plan, get him with a woman who would make a much better fit, Amanda’s caseworker Diane, played by the beautiful Kirstie Alley (who is strangely now a Scientologist). Also, the film has the best food fight scene in the history of Hollywood.
