Spoiler alert! The following contains details from Sunday’s series finale of Showtime’s “The Affair.”
After five years and plenty of cringe-inducing plot twists, fans of “The Affair” experienced a rare thing in television these days: a satisfying series finale.
Sunday’s 90-minute finale of Showtime’s romantic drama wrapped up the long story of Noah (Dominic West), Helen (Maura Tierney) and the titular affair (and all the other drama, including murder and #MeToo allegations) that ripped them apart over the series’ five seasons. In the end, we learn, the divorced couple still loves each other, and they come together once again at their daughter Whitney’s (Julia Goldani Telles) wedding.
The episode then flashes forward 30 years into the future, when Helen is dead and Noah is the lonesome, peaceful Lobster Roll proprietor, reading their daughter Stacey’s (Abigail Dylan Harrison) memoir at Helen’s grave and dancing on the shores of Montauk, in a picturesque and peaceful ending to a hard story. Joanie (Anna Paquin) shows up at the Lobster Roll as well, to get some wisdom from Noah, who’s waring a lot of old-age makeup.

Fans were exceptionally pleased with the finale, tweeting their gratitude to the writers and happiness that a story they loved won a satisfying sendoff.
“Wow, what a beautifully, stunning ending to The Affair. It made me happy and sad at the same time,” tweeted one.

“This was the best conclusion to a series I’ve ever watched. Everything was explained. No tables unturned and in the end a true life lesson was taught…..forgiveness,” tweeted another.
#TheAffair Woke early to watch the series finale. This was the best conclusion to a series I’ve ever watched. Everything was explained. No tables unturned and in the end a true life lesson was taught…..forgiveness.
One fan was even more effusive, saying, “This is the most amazing series finale I’ve ever seen in my entire life!! Where were these writers for all my other favorite shows!! SO MUCH CLOSURE!!”

Others noted how good the finale was despite complaints about other aspects of the series.”Was #TheAffair flawed? Yes. Did I cry hysterically during the Helen and Noah dance? Yes.”
Was #TheAffair flawed? Yes. Did I cry hysterically during the Helen and Noah dance? Yes. Did I hate the Joanie storyline? Yes. Was Noah’s old-age makeup atrosh? Yes. Am I ultimately glad I stuck it out for all five seasons? Yes. And will I oddly miss it? Yes. Yes, I will.
And many fans truly appreciated the flash forward, especially the old-age makeup and the inflation in prices at the Lobster Roll. “#TheAffair NOAH SOLLOWAY being the final owner of The Lobster Roll in the 2050’s and selling fish n’ chips for $67.95 (did I read that sign right?!) is ONE OF THE BEST PLOT TWISTS IN THIS SERIES.”
