Stucky' Explained: How 'Avengers: Endgame' Destroyed a Popular Fan Theory About Bucky and Steve

Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes have one of the closest relationships in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve inspired several fan theories, with some even hoping they’d move into romantic territory.

Viewers can’t get enough of this powerful duo. Here’s what we know about the relationship fans have dubbed “Stucky.”

Fans hoped they’d become a romantic relationship

Viewers first met Steve and Bucky in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, when the pair were introduced as best friends. The chemistry between the two impressed everyone. And since then, fans have continued to root for the couple, insisting that they’d make a perfect romance. Fans called the couple “Stucky” and over fifty thousand fan-fiction stories about the two appeared all over the internet.

Unfortunately, despite fans insisting they’d be perfect as a gay couple, Endgame put an end to that theory. Steve went back to live life with Peggy, instead of living happily after with Bucky.

The Marvel Comic Universe has been incorporating more LGBTQ+ characters into its storylines over the last few years, but they’re still sorely lacking when it comes to gay main characters.

Chris Evans loved playing out the ‘Stucky’ relationship with Sebastian Stan

Chris Evans, who plays Steve, gave fans his insight into the “Stucky” relationship during the ACE Comic Con in Chicago last year. “I think that’s one of the more precious relationships for Steve Rogers,” said Evans. “It’s one of the few relationships that’s been able to transfer into the modern-day. It’s one of the few relationships that he can identify as anything we would call home.”

But Evans wasn’t just impressed with the relationship between Steve and Bucky. Evans also felt that he and his co-star, Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky, have great chemistry in real life.

According to him, there’s no one else that Evans would want to film the role with. “He’s just such a sweet guy,” Evans said about Stan. “I really couldn’t have imagined kind of dipping our toes into these uncertain waters at that stage with anyone other than him.”

The praise didn’t end there. It seems that Evans couldn’t stop expressing how much fun he had with Stan. “He was so sweet. I think that first movie he and I were just so terrified together, it made for a lot of nice memories.”

It’s great to see how well the actors get along. That’s probably a major reason why they were able to portray such fantastic chemistry in their roles as Steve and Bucky.

Fans want more Steve, and they could get the opportunity with the new MCU shows coming to Disney+. According to TV Guide, Disney has plans for a new show called The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

We know that Stan and Anthony Mackie will be staring in the show in their previously held roles. The story for the new show takes place after Steve passes his shield to Sam at the end of Endgame, so that puts Evans out as a main character.

But fans are hoping that Steve could make an appearance at some point during the episodes to say hello to his old friend.

Unfortunately, we don’t know a whole lot about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier yet. But Disney is hoping the show will be a big draw for new sign-ups to the streaming service, so they’ll have a lot of reasons to make the show a fan favorite.

If they can get MCU mega-fans to be impressed with the show, it could mean big success for the network. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is set for 2020. Hopefully, it will live up to the hype.
