Strictly’s Kelvin Fletcher ‘wipes’ string of pro-Brexit social media posts

Strictly favourite Kelvin Fletcher could face a viewer backlash after it emerged he put a string of pro-Brexit posts on social media.

Sources claim the Emmerdale actor wiped the tweets before he signed up to the show.

Kelvin, 35, publicly backed Leave ahead of the referendum back in 2016.

His posts are no longer visible online but a number of replies to his comments are still accessible on Twitter.

One said: “I want my country, its laws and its borders back. Great Britain survived thousands of years without pandering to Europe.” Another added: “I’m with you Kelvin, I voted Leave too.”

The actor also proudly showed then-Conservative PM David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne around the Emmerdale village when the pair visited Yorkshire in 2015.

Kelvin played Andy Sugden in the ITV soap for 20 years before quitting the show in 2016.

He has since deleted the pictures that he posted online following Mr Cameron’s visit.

A source close to the actor, who is partnered with Oti Mabuse, said: “It’s pretty standard that celebrities, especially those that are about to go on to a big TV show, go back through their social media history to make sure there isn’t anything controversial or something that might show them in a bad light.

“And with the way everything is at the moment, having strong views on Brexit definitely comes under that.

“Many people blame David Cameron for calling the referendum and plunging the country into crisis, so again it’s understandable that he decided to remove these posts.”

The source said Kelvin deleted the tweets and toned down his political views on Brexit because he didn’t want to alienate those BBC viewers who had voted Remain.

They added: “Brexit has divided the nation for the last three years.

“Now that Kelvin is on Saturday night’s biggest show there was no way he was going to risk alienating half of the voting public.”

We approached the BBC last night for comment.
