Strictly Come Dancing 2019: Saffron Barker slammed by professional over ‘messy’ dance

Ian Waite is a regular on Strictly Come Dancing’s It Takes Two and often critiques the contestants while they are rehearsing. Today, Zoe Ball welcomed him back to the BBC Two show to discuss how the celebrities are getting on, and it seems he had some choice words about Saffron Barker and AJ Pritchard.

Zoe made viewers aware that Saffron and her dance partner AJ Pritchard will be performing a contemporary dance for their Couple’s Choice performance on Saturday.

The presenter said to Ian, looking forward to his expert opinion: “Right decision. Are you happy?”

“Not for me. No,” he responded as the crowd sounded surprised in the background.

Zoe said Ian was “charming” before placing her hands on her hips to show her disapproval of his comments.

Making his point, Ian gestured at the video clip that was playing which featured Saffron and AJ at rehearsals and said it looked “messy” from this point.

“It’s early on. They’re doing this flying lift step...” he searched for the words to say before Zoe interjected: “Is that the official title?”

“I don’t know,” he exclaimed as cheers of laughter erupted from behind the camera.

The former Strictly professional added: “There’s lots of places where she looks a little bit lost but it’s early days.”

On a more positive note, he added that “she’s a great dancer” and thought she will do just fine.

Backing Saffron’s corner, Zoe pointed out that this was also down to AJ who is her dancing partner.

However, Ian quickly indicated that Saffron didn’t have control of her shoulders, which were too high up in comparison to AJ’s.

“Saffron don’t lose heart. I think you’re going to be phenomenal,” Zoe said in support of the young YouTuber.

This Saturday, viewers will see Saffron and AJ performing a contemporary dance to the song ‘Because You Loved Me’.

Last week the pair danced the Paso Doble for Movie Week inspired by The Hunger Games.

They scored their highest mark to date with 28 out of 40 and came fifth on the leaderboard along with Emma Weymouth and Aljaž Škorjanec

There’s no doubt that fans will be excited to see what the social media star has in store in her next performance.

Elsewhere on It Takes Two, former Arsenal player Alex Scott and her partner Neil Jones joined Zoe to discuss their performance last week.

Speaking about her Moana themed Rumba, Alex said: “The messages that we got from social media, either people were crying or kids actually now think I’m the real Moana.”

Asked if she enjoyed the dance, Alex said: “I did. It was all about the story telling and we worked so hard all week for people to believe it.”

The football pundit expressed that she wasn’t too pleased with her score of 23 because she “worked so hard on her footwork”. The pair will be performing a Tango this Saturday.

Strictly Come Dancing 2019 continues Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One and it Takes Two returns tomorrow at 6.30 on BBC Two.
