Spoilers: Mick discovers the truth about Linda's alcoholism in EastEnders
Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) has been seeking solace in alcohol in EastEnders, but she found herself in deep trouble earlier in the week when she was arrested for driving under the influence. A court appearance during last night’s episode resulted in her receiving a driving ban, but — as Mick (Danny Dyer) learned what happened — Linda hit the bottle once more.
As she dropped Ollie off at school on Monday morning, Linda reversed her car into another, and it soon came to light that the owner of the other vehicle was none other than Shelley. As a result, the Queen Vic landlady found herself getting breathalysed by a police officer, before she was subsequently arrested for drink driving.
With Mick in a good mood following positive news from the doctor — not to mention his excitement for the impending Wife Swap competition — Linda resolved to keep the truth from him, and thus — on the day of her appearance at the magistrate’s court — she headed off on her own.
However, Mick discovered the truth and made it to the court in time — just as Linda entered her guilty plea. Devastated, the Queen Vic landlord tore into his wife, as he berated her for getting into the car while she was over the limit.
During the argument, he asked Linda if she even considered Ollie’s wellbeing, which resulted in Linda storming off, as she headed over to Max’s (Jake Wood) for the Wife Swap. While there, she continued to hit the bottle, before crashing out cold on the sofa.
Meanwhile, knowing he’d put his foot in it, Mick opened up to Ruby (Louisa Lytton), and thus he called Linda up to apologise — but her phone went to voicemail.
During tonight’s episode, Linda woke up on Max’s couch with a banging hangover, and listened to Mick’s voicemail, before breaking down in tears.
In spite of her feeling the worse for wear, she headed over to The Vic, where Mick apologised once more — which prompted Linda to do the same, as the loved-up couple embraced.
As the episode progressed, Linda avoided alcohol and, after arranging for her and Mick to meet Max and Ruby for a drink, she remained on the sparkling water.
Things were certainly looking up for Mick — that is, until Max jokingly commented about Linda’s ability to drink him under the table.
Concerned, Mick glared at the wife from across the bar, as she downed a large glass of booze — the worry incredibly evident on his face.
It seems as if the pieces of the puzzle are all starting to fit for Mick.
With him officially concerned about Linda’s drinking, will he realise that she’s in need of help?
Linda’s alcoholism is set to be a long-running storyline, and viewers have already seen her reliance on booze impair her judgement — from drink to driving to uncharacteristically lashing out at her mates — so it’s likely it will take some time before the Carter matriarch realises that she needs help.
The question is: will she get it before it’s too late?
With Mick now concerned for her well-being, here’s hoping so.
EastEnders continues Monday 2nd December at 8pm on BBC One.
