Ruby Rose Says She Was More Like Batwoman When She Was Younger

Ruby Rose has given her all to bring Batwoman to life. So much so that she underwent surgery last week due to injuries she suffered filming the show’s intense stunts. Viewers will finally get to see all her hard work when Batwoman premieres. Rose plays Kate Kane, a loner who returns to Gotham City still blaming Batman for letting her mother and sister die.

Kate doesn’t even know that her cousin Bruce Wayne was Batman yet. But with Batman gone from Gotham City for three years, she decides to take up the mantle as Batwoman. Rose spoke with reporters after the Television Critics Association panel for Batwoman. Batwoman premieres Sunday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. on The CW.

Ruby Rose isn’t like ‘Batwoman’ anymore

Kate Kane has a lot to be upset about. Not only did she lose her mother and sister, but she doesn’t have a great relationship with her father, Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott). Now she’s facing Gotham City’s latest supervillain, Alice (Rachel Skarsten). Ruby Rose turns it on for the cameras.

“I don’t brood as much,” Rose said. “I really don’t. I smile more.”

How Ruby Rose relates to ‘Batwoman’

Ruby Rose is happy now, but she can relate to the turmoil Kate faces. Rose had her own challenges growing up and trying to be out.

“I feel like I was more like her when I was younger,” Rose said. “The hesitation of trusting people, letting people in, feeling like I could do everything on my own, not having a big family. Being gay obviously but that’s not the biggest part of the show.”

How much younger? Think teens and young adulthood, although Kate Kane still has those feelings at Rose’s current age.

“There’s a lot that I definitely experienced throughout earlier teens, maybe even early 20s but now I don’t share with her, but I can see why she feels the way she does.”

Gotham City turns all those emotions up to 11.

“I also don’t live in Gotham,” Rose said. “So it’s different when you live in Gotham and the world is like that. Not that we’re far from it but it’s a heavier situation whereas I feel like my life is pretty well put together unlike Kate who’s figuring it out.”

Ruby Rose wanted to do the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” storyline

The very first episode of Batwoman shows flashbacks to Kate’s time in the military. Thanks to the military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, Kate’s relationship with another woman compromises her military career.

“That’s in a lot of the comics and that was important to me that we did that in the right kind of way just because of the gravity of that,” Rose said. “I believe we did. I think we’ll probably touch more on it. We try to fit as much as we can into the pilot but it’s not a lot of time.”

Ruby Rose hopes she’s one of many ‘Batwomen’

Hearing Ruby Rose speak about Batwoman and Kate Kane, it’s clear she knows her character. That said, she’s not possessive over her.

“I own my version of her,” Rose said. “I’m sure there’s going to be many other versions after this and there’s going to be different actors who play it. It’s an entity far bigger than me but a version that I get to play and the Kate that I’ve developed and love, she is a certain way.”

When Batwoman is over, hopefully after many seasons, Rose looks forward to seeing the next Batwoman.

“I look forward to seeing, who knows, when I’m 60 and I’m like, ‘Hey kids, I was Batwoman’ and it’s like, ‘Whatever, Selena Gomez’s great granddaughter is Batwoman now,’” Rose said. “I’m sure there’ll be many reincarnations and I’m excited about that but it’s definitely a legacy piece that I really think is important and I dedicate a lot of my time to.”
