Roy Cropper (David Neilson) is confronting his mortality in a sad new Coronation Street video, as next week, he hands Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) goodbye letters.

The café king recently collapsed with more chest pains, and was then diagnosed with angina, with him needing an operation.

While the odds are on his side, there are risks for these procedures, and Roy is a bit more frightened than he is letting on.

Next week, his fears mount, and he ends up sleepwalking again due to his anxieties.

Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) worries about him, which leads to him confiding in her about his diagnosis.

When Evelyn comes into the café, Roy tells her that while he is sure the op will be a success, he is preparing for the worst outcome.

Evelyn is dismayed when he hands her a set of letters, and asks her to give them to lose he loves in the event of his death.

While Evelyn brands this emotional blackmail, she concedes and agrees, telling Roy that he will be getting them right back when he is better.

As the day of the procedure approaches, Evelyn ends up reading her own letter, and is moved to see that Roy has declared strong feelings for her.

After things go okay, Evelyn is ready for romance it seems, but has Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) beaten her to it?

Evelyn is miffed to find Yasmeen by Roy’s bed as he recovers, and decides against sharing her own feelings with him.

Is this the end of any flicker of romance?

A few months ago, Maureen wasn’t sure that the scriptwriters would go there with the pair, and poured cold water on the notion of them pairing up romantically.

‘I don’t think Evelyn has the hots for Roy, or him for her,’ she maintained to us. ‘It’s lukewarm at best and I don’t think she’s going to get her vest off.

‘But there are many forms of love, they’re lonely people. She had the chance for romance with Arthur and sort of blew it. I think the stable door is shut and the horse has bolted!’

She hopes, however, that it’s a relationship that will continue because she enjoys working with David Neilson so much. ‘David Neilson is an actor after my own heart,’ she said. ‘He’s extremely detailed and full of subtext and I like working with him.’

Coronation Street will air this episode on Wednesday May 31 at 7:30pm on ITV.
