Rami Malek feared he'd be 'religious terrorist' in Bond 25

After taking on the role of the latest villain in James Bond, Rami Malek has admitted he was hesitant to accept the part.

The next spin in the long-running franchise is currently being filmed with Daniel Craig taking on the suited and booted secret agent once more.

And now Oscar-winning actor Rami has admitted he felt a little trepidation at the thought of being cast as a ‘religious fundamentalist’ or ‘Arab-speaking terrorist’.

Rami is of Egyptian heritage and asked for confirmation from Bond 25 director Cary Fukunaga that wouldn’t be the fabric of his character.

‘It’s a great character and I’m very excited,’ Rami told The Mirror. ‘But that was one thing that I discussed with Cary.

‘I said, “We cannot identify him with any act of terrorism reflecting an ideology or a religion. That’s not something I would entertain, so if that is why I am your choice then you can count me out”.

‘But that was clearly not his vision. So he’s a very different kind of terrorist.’

Rami added the script for the latest turn – which may see Daniel Craig taking on his final task as Bond – was ‘extremely clever’ and he felt a ‘substantial weight’ on his shoulders, having grown up with the franchise.

A summary for the next instalment revealed that 007 ‘has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica’ but will come up against a villain armed with the ‘dangerous new technology’.

While it’s part and parcel of being a Bond villain, it’s been claimed Rami – who recently won the best actor Oscar for his turn in Bohemian Rhapsody – will have one of the grisliest deaths in 007 history.

Cool.

It’s been reported Mr Robot star Rami will play ‘a mysterious villain with new and dangerous technology’ and that’s only going to end in strangulation at the hands of Daniel, apparently.

A source previously told The Mirror: ‘It is going to be one of the most thrilling and gruesome ends ever seen.’

The film has encountered various filming setbacks, following the departure of original director Danny Boyle, who was replaced by Cary.

Not long after Daniel was injured and had to undergo surgery, while most recently it’s been suggested Grace Jones exited the project, which she was set to film a cameo for.

Bond 25 is scheduled for release in April 2020.
