The three-part drama begins when one of the show’s creators David Briggs (played by Elliot Levey) pitched the idea of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? to an ITV boss.
When the programme made its debut in 1998, it became an instant hit, gripping the nation as contestants tried to win the jackpot.
Among those who were fascinated with the series was married couple Major Charles (Matthew Macfadyen) and Diana Ingram (Sian Clifford), who made several attempts to get on the show.
But not only did they want to appear on the series, but the parents-of-three wanted to win the £1million.

Who is Adrian Pollock on Quiz?
Adrian Pollock (Trystan Gravelle) was the brother of Diana who was involved in what became known as the “coughing scandal” on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.
Just like his sister, he was obsessed with the quiz show and wanted more than anything to be a contestant.
To get themselves prepared for the possibility, Adrian built a replica “fastest finger” machine to practice on, while Diana started creating a book with tips on how to get on the series.
So when both of them got their opportunities to appear in the series, they were over the moon.
Adrian, who was from the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales, was a contestant on the show on December 23, 2000.
Despite answering most of the questions correctly, he just won £32,000 after failing to answer the one which could have won him £64,000.
This was the only time Adrian got to sit across from presenter Chris Tarrant (Martin Sheen) but he had previously been on the show on January 21 and September 2000 as a Fastest Finger First contestant.
He also appeared in the audience when his sister Diana got her chance on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.

Unfortunately for Diana, she was also only about to win £32,000 when she was on the series on April 5, 2001, much to her disappointment.
As neither her nor her brother could win the £1million grand prize, it was then up to Diana’s husband Charles to try and win but this time, he was going to get help.
To everyone’s surprise, army Major Charles won the money but when the cameras were turned off, suspicions began to arise as the makers of the show believed Diana and fellow contestant Tecwen Whittock (Michael Jibson) had been coughing to alert him of the right answers.
This then led to all three of them going to court where they were accused of cheating.
