Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell reveals she suffered heartbreaking miscarriage in 2018
The Canadian actress, 31, took to her Instagram Stories as 2019 dawned to reflect on the past year, sharing a series of pictures with her friends, family and fans from events and holidays all over the world.
But as she came towards the end of her trip down memory lane, she wrote: "Lastly, although it was an amazing year, it didn't come without some hardships."
Shay – who played Emily Fields in the hit teen drama until it ended in 2017 – then shared a shot of her ultrasound scan with a heartbroken emoji over the top.
She continued: "We all have to deal with various struggles and challenges in life and sometimes it’s easier to only showcase the good times on social media, which is what leads many people to criticize it for its lack of authenticity.
"Having so many people follow me on Instagram and read my posts is both incredibly humbling and hugely uplifting.
"The support and affection that so many of you show me lifts me up during even my darkest days, one of which happened last year after I miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams."
Shay then called for her followers to show more compassion and patience with those around them, as you never really know what another person is going through behind closed doors.
She wrote: "In the spirit of the new year, I think that we need to remember that we are all on this journey together—in good times and in bad—and to remind ourselves that we seldom really know or understand the struggles and hardships that other people are going through.
Shay's fans immediately rushed to share their condolences and offer words of encouragement.
One wrote: "Can’t even think about what you’ve been through. I'm so proud of you and we are all here for you!!! We supporting you and admiring you every single day."
Another added: "So much love to you my lovely Shay, this must be the worst thing ever, but you are strong, that child was an angel for you and I know that you will have your child soon, big love!
"You are a strong woman, and we are here for you!"
