Poldark's Eleanor Tomlinson joins new Stephen Merchant drama The Offenders alongside Christopher Walken

POLDARK'S Eleanor Tomlinson has joined new Stephen Merchant drama The Offenders alongside Christopher Walken.

The 28-year-old actress is best known for playing Demelza in the hit BBC period drama.

Now she has been confirmed to star alongside Hollywood legend Christopher, 77, in the new six-part series written by Stephen.

The upcoming BBC One and Amazon Prime Video drama is currently called The Offenders and will follow seven strangers from different backgrounds as they carry out a Community Payback sentence in Bristol.

The unconventional group will become more and more involved in each other's lives and somehow find themselves caught up with a criminal gang.

Oscar-winner Christopher will lead the stellar cast in his first lead British television role.

He will play Frank, an inveterate scoundrel trying to reconnect with his family.

The cast also includes Killing Eve's Darren Boyd, former EastEnders actress Clare Perkins and Honour's Rhianne Barreto.

Stephen, 46, will write, direct and star in the series as a lonely lawyer called Greg.

Greg is not only juggling a divorce and a spot of workplace bullying but also "scary men with knives".

Meanwhile Eleanor will play Gabby, an aristocrat whose glamour and life of leisure masks deep-rooted problems.

Confirming filming is already underway in Bristol, Stephen said: "Like so many other productions, we'd just begun filming when COVID-19 struck and we had to shut-down.

"I'm delighted that we're now finally able to resume filming with this incredible cast and finish this long-standing passion project.

"This is the first series I've made in my hometown of Bristol and I'm so excited to showcase the city and utilise the amazing local talent."
