Pointless Celebrities: ‘Not allowed’ Richard Osman unveils NEW rule in The Chase gaffe

Richard, 48, and Alexander, 49, were on hand to help four pairs of celebrities try and get their hands on the Pointless jackpot prize.

The famous faces trying to test their general knowledge on the BBC quiz show included T’Pau singer Carol Decker, 61, and Musical Youth star Dennis Seaton, 52, as well as former Jockey Bob Champion, 70, and former world tennis NO.5 Jo Durie, 58.

Completing the line-up were weatherman John Kettley, 66, and TV fitness star Lizzie Webb, with former glamour model Samantha Fox, 53, and comedian Duncan Norvelle, 61, trying their hand at becoming champions.

However, it was when Richard was welcoming Duncan that the rule about ITV quiz show The Chase came into the conversation.

We’re not allowed to use the word

After explaining Lizzie had won the show before and telling her it was a rarity for contestants to win a double jackpot, Richard turned to Duncan.

The host said: “Duncan, delighted you changed your catchphrase from Chase Me,” with Alexander and the audience bursting into laughter.

Richard then continued: “Because I was going to say, we’re not allowed to use the word ‘Chase’ on this show,” with the chorus of laughter continuing.

During the weekdays, the quiz shows air at the same time, which led Richard to make the light-hearted comment about the ‘Chase’ rule.

As the first round got under way, Duncan explained to the presenters how he’d come about the catchphrase “Catch Me” he would reference during his performances.

Alexander said before the comedian had his chance to answer the questions: “Duncan Nouvelle, the character you played, his catchphrase was ‘Chase Me’ which caught on.”

Duncan explained: “That happened to me in a club in Scotland where I pinched this fellas drink and he didn’t laugh.

“It was an old joke I used to do when I was doing Michael Crawford, I’d say, ‘Is your house lined with this new foam to keep the heat in?’

“He says, ‘You’ve got to be joking,’ and I said, ‘Well you could be losing this much every week,’ and I drunk his drink straight down.

“He just looked at me and I said, ‘Go on, chase me,’ and he chased me. He’s still outside waiting for me,” the comedian joked.

After his explanation of the iconic catchphrase, the comedian failed to get a pointless answer which consequently, led to his and Samantha’s exit from the show.

Following another round of general knowledge quiz mastery, it was Carol and Dennis who had to bid farewell as they failed to get a low score.

This meant sporting legends Bob and Jo faced former jackpot winner Lizzie and weatherman John to battle it out to get their hands on the prize to donate to their chosen charities.

After a head-to-head round, it was sports personalities Bob and Jo who had their chance to get their hands on the prize money.

However, their efforts were fruitless as they fell at the final hurdle.

On yesterday’s edition of the civilian series, Richard had to issue a warning to co-host Alexander when the presenter decided to make some fun puns, with the quiz guru telling him they were at risk of running behind schedule.

Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.
