Phillip Schofield’s ‘derogatory’ comment to cleaners in Trump debate slammed

Phillip Schofield has been slammed for making a 'stereotypical and derogatory' comment about cleaners.

This Morning viewers have criticised the presenter for his controversial remark towards the profession during a discussion on the USA's escalating crisis with Iraq.

Two US airbases in Iraq have been hit by dozens of ballistic missiles from Iran in retaliation to the killing of their most powerful military commander, Qassem Suleimani.

Holly Willoughby asked whether the world was relying on Donald Trump having a "good night's sleep" as everyone waits for his next move.

Phillip pointed out the lack of figureheads in Trump's team – then questioned who was giving him advice when he made the controversial comment on cleaners.

The presenter said: "Well this is picking up on Holly's point that she made right at the very beginning. It depends in what mood he’s woken up to.

"You read books about Donald Trump and its alleged by people in those books he will listen to the last person he’s spoken to. So you’d better hope it’s not the cleaner.

"But when he goes down there into the situation room that decision has to be, and ultimately be, the President's with advice behind him."

Some This Morning viewers took offence to Phillip's comments regarding Trump speaking to a cleaner.

One angry viewer said: "Phillip Schofield obviously thinking that being a cleaner is the lowest of the low"

"@Schofe on ThisMorningShow saying that @realDonaldTrump listens to the last person he spoke to.. Phil then says ‘hope it wasn’t the cleaner’ sounded a bit derogatory to me," added another.

A third said: "Odd comment from Phil regarding Trump chatting to a cleaner…"

"Phillip’s throwaway remark ‘let’s hope it’s not the cleaner!’ ( last person he speaks to each day is the person Trump listens to .) very stereotypical & derogatory to cleaners," said a fourth.

The This Morning hosts were joined in the studio by security experts Will Geddis and Dr Sally Leivesley.

When asked if Trump's next moves depend on his mood, Will said: "I think they are to a certain extent. What he does next and in the 24 hours will tell us if it can settle down for a bit or if he’s sabre rattling and antagonising the Iranian leadership."

Phil said the retaliation could have been a line drawn, then asked Will whether he thought the US President would go further.

Will said: "I think ultimately it will be a loss of face for Iran. They're saying we won’t be bullied by the US. I think it important the next step Trump takes good advice, good counsel and a more measured approach."

Dr Leivesley said it would be a mistake to "underestimate" the severity of the situation and Mr Trump's response.

She said: "Unfortunately we have to understand the scale of the threat has come from Iran. We have a potential for Iran and North Korea to join together and have missiles come to play.

"We want the US and Iran to very quickly come into UN desculaton."
