Phillip Schofield tears into David Cameron for ‘throwing grenade and running’ from Brexit

This Morning host Phillip Schofield did not hold back as he grilled David Cameron about the referendum in 2016 and his decision to step down as Prime Minster after the country voted to leave the Europe Union.

When asked why the referendum had happened in the first place, David explained: “The referendum didn’t come from nowhere… people were frustrated.

“The last time we voted on it was 40 years ago.”

He continued: “I accept my responsibility for holding the referendum, and for losing the referendum, because I wanted us to stay, and some of the difficult consequences that followed.”

“My plan was to try and keep Britain in a reformed Europe, and I failed in that endeavour. And I accept my share of the responsibility for the difficulties that have followed.”

Phillip asked David what he would say to those waiting to find out how we will leave Europe who are trying to sell homes and figure out what to do with their business.

“I do hope we can get out of it soon,” David replied, adding he wishes Prime Minister Boris Johnson “well”.

Later Phillip asked David why he decided it was the right time for a referendum and why he stepped down from his position as Prime Minister.

“Well that’s the other thing, that people saw that you got us into that mess, into this mess that three years later,” he began. “Because Europe has always been the achilles heel of the Tory party.”

“Well not just the Conservative Party, there was a genuine problem with Europe changing in front of our eyes and us trying to deal with that and you know, every political party promised a referendum at some stage between 2005 and 2015,” David defended.

But Phillip didn’t appear too impressed as he hit back: “But then what you appeared to do was throw a grenade and run away.”

“Well, I’m very sorry that was the impression some people got,” David commented.

“As I say, I felt after the referendum that I had thrown myself into the campaign and so strongly on one side.

“I wasn’t the sort of chairman, like on the one hand, on the other hand.

“I was 100 per cent on the battle lines fighting to keep us in a reformed EU and the country voted anther way and I just felt I’d have no credibility if I stayed.

“We needed a new Prime Minister and didn’t think I’d be leaving in a few days, I thought it would be three months.”

Also in the interview, David had to apologise when he accidentally swore live on air.

As Phillip said there would be viewers who were “spitting at the TV,” David exclaimed: “We sh*t at the telly.”

He quickly realised his error as he added: “Shout, shout! Excuse me, sorry. We’ve broken a new boundary.”
