Peaky Blinders season 5, episode 5: What will happen in The Shock?

The latest series of Peaky Blinders is almost at an end after only recently returning. Events have moved swiftly starting with a major turn in the fortunes of the Shelby family thanks to the Wall Street Crash of 1929 wiping out their finances and forcing them to return to illicit money-making schemes. Brummie godfather and now MP, Tommy Shelby OBE (played by Cillian Murphy) is trying to balance his political ambitions in Westminster with his criminal enterprises.

However, the synopsis for next week’s episode suggests audiences can expect another twist in the tale.

The BBC summary reads: “Mosley takes advantage of shocking events to give a speech to the gathered crowd at Arrow House. Afterwards, Mosley gives Tommy his instructions.

“Arthur and his men arrive at Limehouse for the arranged rendezvous, but the situation has changed drastically.

“Meanwhile, Tommy visits an old war comrade who has a very specific skill that Tommy intends to use.”

Judging by the short blurb, Tommy and Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) will clash further as the MP moves to announce the formation of his fascist party and a break away from Labour.

After this week’s stand-off between the two men, which saw Mosley essentially demanding to sleep with Tommy’s wife Lizzie (Natasha O’Keeffe), their relationship is balancing on the edge of a precipice and could tumble off at any point.

Tommy is also desperate to take down Mosley, whom he secretly despises and is spying on for the king.

However, Mosley could have the upper hand next week as Tommy is left trying to save his business when a deal goes awry.

By the sound of things, the deal with Brilliant Chang could fall through or perhaps the authorities will discover the Peaky Blinders in Limehouse with the agreement to move the drugs to Birmingham not going to plan.

Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) could be plunged into danger as he carries out the job for Tommy.

To make things worse he will be reeling from the death of his wife Linda Shelby (Kate Phillips), who was killed this week by Polly (Helen McCrory) after she tried to pull the trigger on Arthur.

This week saw Michael Gray (Finn Cole) coming back into the fold after agreeing to help balance the books again.

He managed to convince his wife Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy) that it would be beneficial to them in the long run – even of it meant returning to Birmingham rather than the bright lights of New York.

Also, judging by the looks Gina was exchanging with Mosley, she was clearly enchanted by the fascist and baronet.

Meanwhile, a truce was called between Tommy and Scottish gang leader Jimmy McCavern (Brian Gleeson) after previous violence.

Whether the peace will hold remains to be seen given Mosley’s duplicitous nature after he reluctantly signed a contract guaranteeing payment should the Billy Boys fail to cough up what they owed.

There was also a lighter moment between Polly and Aberama Gold (Aidan Gillen) proposed to her after he proposed to her as part of a deal to placate him following the murder of his son Bonnie (Jack Rowan).

Peaky Blinders airs on BBC One on Sundays at 9pm
