Outlander season six is currently gearing up for filming to begin once again ahead of the show’s return to Starz. While fans wait, many have been left wanting to know more about how the series is created. Express.co.uk recently spoke to Claire Fraser double Kirstin Gribbon about what it is like to play the character.

Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) is much-beloved as one of the leads of time-travelling drama Outlander.

The World War Two nurse begins the story by accidentally travelling through time on a visit to Scotland with her husband.

She soon finds herself in 1700s Scotland where she meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

Viewers have followed her over five seasons so far as she deals with life in another time, as well as heartbreak, raising a family and mortal danger.

As a result, many fans will want to know more about what it is like to be her in the series.

To find out more about this, Express.co.uk recently spoke to the star’s double.

Gribbon appeared as Claire’s stand-in during several scenes in season three of the show.

This included being a lighting double for the star as well as a stunt double in episode eight.

Fans might not realise it was actually her who appeared to run down the hill with Jamie after they spotted Young Ian (John Bell) in danger.

Given her unique experience of appearing in the show as a Claire double, the star gave some insight into what it is like to play her.

Speaking about becoming the beloved character, Gribbon opened up on the practicalities of the transformation.

She explained: “You’re there for a couple of hours – so you get on set and then you’re told to wait.

“Obviously there are probably hundreds of people waiting in front of you to get their costumes fitted, I think it’s first come, first serve.

“They always do the costumes first because you don’t want to get any make-up or anything like that on the costumes.

“There’s a huge art department at the Cumbernauld Studio, which is really cool.

“It’s beautiful because I love fashion myself so they have all their timetables and their inspirations of how women used to dress in different eras.

“Obviously, Outlander is based not just on the 17th century but on the 20th century, the 70s, the 60s. So they’ve got different costumes for different eras.”

After the costumes are sorted, the stars head into make-up to transform into their characters before heading on to set.

She also revealed how at one point she was getting ready alongside Balfe and Heughan, which was an exciting experience.

Gribbon explained: “We were actually in the same trailer together getting our hair and make-up done together.

“So she was sitting right next to me and I was freaking out and Sam was right next to me. I got the exact same outfit as her.”

Sadly, however, Gribbon only appeared in season three as Claire’s double as she had to move away from Scotland where the show is filmed.

She is now an accomplished model and fans can head to her Instagram account KristinGribbin to see what she has been up to.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
