Outlander season 5: Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan teases ‘toughest season yet’
Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) romance is as passionate as ever in the Starz series and things finally seem settled for the Fraser family. However, with mounting pressure and impending Revolution ahead, Outlander’s new idyllic homestead won’t stay secure for long.
It’s not often that fans of an epic series of books get to see their favourite saga translated so faithfully to a visual medium.
Thankfully that’s exactly what has happened with Diana Gabaldon’s sprawling time travelling series, and the cult series has only grown with popularity.
The previous season ended way back in January 2019, so fans have been waiting just over a year for their favourite anachronistic lovers to return to screens.
To viewers’ delight, season five began last week with the series’ most romantic episode yet, as the co-leads’ daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) finally married her beau Roger (Richard Rankin).

- Outlander season 5: Caitriona Balfe outs new ‘distracting’ co-star
Accompanied by a horde of screaming fans, Caitriona and Sam recently appeared on Good Morning America to tease the dark turns fans should expect from the new season.
Caitriona eased fans’ worries by confirming that the earlier episodes will ease into the chaos that will unfold later on in the season.
She said: “In the beginning we have a lovely opening episode.”
Although there were subtle hints towards the impending American Revolution, fans were glad to see the premiere take a breather and enjoy a traditional Scottish wedding.
However, the star continued: “Things are very cosy and comfortable and all is well, then in true Outlander form it doesn’t last for very long.”
Outlander season five has already delivered on this promise, with Murtagh’s (Duncan Lacroix) new role with the Regulators subjecting viewers to a brutal tarring and feathering scene.
Jamie’s conflicting loyalties to his godfather and Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) will also be tested, as he is forced to start hunting down his former father figure.
Even though Brianna and Roger have a new baby to look after, and the arrival of Adso the cat has fans becoming gooey eyed for the new season, the cosy atmosphere of season five is guaranteed to be short-lived.

Sam Heughan said of his chemistry with Caitriona: “Of course it gets better with time, it matures and consolidates.”
The star already confirmed that the upcoming season will be among Outlander’s most romantic, but with that comes the Frasers’ most difficult trials.
He added: “Every season, every episode there’s always a challenge. This season is no exception, it might be the toughest season yet.”
During the interview, this comment was met with an anxious reaction from the crowd.

Claire and Sam’s relationship has been tested in the past, most notably when the couple were forced to separate for twenty years.
Now Jamie’s hunt for Murtagh has commenced, and Claire is stretching her medical knowledge to the limits, things could begin to get strenuous for the residents of the new happy homestead at Fraser’s Ridge.
Adapting one of Diana Gabaldon’s longest books in the series, The Fiery Cross, will be a challenge, but viewers are looking forward to the most satisfying season yet.
