Clive, 57, and wife Amanda Owen, 47 often have to endure difficult conditions in the winter as they run Ravenseat in Channel 5’s Our Yorkshire Farm. One episode saw the couple demonstrating just how tough things can get as they tried to care for a flock of sheep during a blizzard. Clive explained the knock-on effect a bad winter can have on the sheep when it comes to springtime.

Having embraced a tough, outdoor way of life, the Owens, with their nine children, have become used to battling the elements.

But Clive detailed to the cameras the struggle that sometimes comes with the work.

Explaining they can’t afford to make mistakes, he added: “There’s no set plan, there are no set rules.

“You take each day each year each month as you find it.

“When there’s deep snow the sheep are having the toughest time.”

Amanda stood in the thick snow marking the flock with spray as Clive continued: “So we’ve got to help them, because they can get really low in condition in the spring.

“If they’re too poor, then things don’t go well at all. Little lambs and not much milk, you don’t want that.

“So we just have to work away.” One of the couple’s sons, Sidney, had joined his parents to help out.

The nine-year-old was asked about his online schoolwork, to which he replied: “I’ve got to do both – a bit of farming and my school work.”

“There were some places where he was sinking up to his waist in the snow,” Amanda admitted.

But the schoolboy was able to face the harsh conditions to help round up the sheep with his parents.

The aspiring shepherd grew up in the great outdoors, so is used to the demands of the farm.

All members of the family get stuck in to help in all kinds of conditions, with youngest child Nancy also getting involved with the farming lifestyle.

Together they have faced everything the farm has thrown at them, with one episode showing how the family were left with no water due to similarly snowy conditions.

The episode saw 12-year-old Edith and five-year-old Clemmy collecting some water from a nearby river in freezing conditions.

Amanda commented: “You do not realise how much water you use until you haven’t got any.

“Fortunately, we do have a river in close proximity to the house, but still it’s all to carry.

“We’ve had water off for 10 days before which was really, really bad.

“We had to go and check on the water tank which is about a mile away. So, the first challenge will be getting there.”

Amanda, Clive and two of their sons Miles and Sid set out in a farm truck to get to the tank.

Our Yorkshire Farm is available to watch on My5.
