Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) has been in the series NCIS the longest of all the characters and is much loved by fans. However, it’s possible the head of the crime solving-team might want to leave his role behind in the not too distant future. If he goes, some fans are convinced they know who will come in to replace him on the show – here’s what you need to know about this.
Who will replace Leroy Gibbs on NCIS?
NCIS fans have been concerned about Gibbs exiting the show for the past few seasons.
This was sparked in season 17 when he spoke to his therapist about the potential of retiring.
While in the conversation Gibbs is clear he will be staying around for a while longer, some fans were left worried.
As well as this, speculation has already begun about who might potentially replace him when he leaves.

Some names who have been floating around include previous cast members like Cote de Pablo’s Ziva David and Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNizzo.
However, other viewers are convinced the creators could go in a completely different direction with a recurring character brought back in.
The character in question is Abby Borin (Diane Neal) who was a Special Agent of the Coast Guard Investigative Service.
Posting on Reddit, fan BrotherAtxmic wrote: “Mark Harmon is 68 now, and he has been on the show for 17 seasons.
“He will most likely leave at some point in the near future. Who could be brought in to replace him?
“The best I could come up with was Abby from the CGIS, as she is a similar kind of personality and already has some history with the team.”
Fans will remember how Abby appeared in a number of different episodes of NCIS, including a short stint on the spin-off show NCIS New Orleans.
She was known for her no-nonsense personality as well as getting along well with the rest of the team.
Actor Diana Neal also has experience on another hit procedural as starred as Casey Novak in 113 episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
However, some fans were not as sold on the idea and put forward their own theories about a potential replacement.

Fan cudambercam13 speculated whether Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) could be a good fit as a replacement.
They wrote: “Torres seems bossy enough (can’t think of a better word) to take over even though he hasn’t been there long.
“How he responded to Phineas going missing when he told Gibbs that either he was going to help or he’d need to be fired proved he was probably worthy of it.
“Nobody else would have stood up to Gibbs that way, especially not in their early years of joining the team.”
While another fan named CuriousSocialist wondered if Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) could return.
They wrote: “If Ziva keeps making guest appearances and we keep hearing about Tony, maybe Michael Weatherly should come back as Gibbs replacement.”
There seems to be plenty of potential options for who could take the job.

However, at the moment there is no confirmation Harmon is actually planning on leaving as Gibbs any time soon.
In the past, he has said he will leave the show when he’s no longer excited about the storylines proposed.
He told People Magazine in 2019: “I’ve always thought if there’s ever a time where the writers are walking into the room and going ‘I don’t know what to do,’ then I think we all have to look at each other and call it a day. But we’re not there yet.”
Therefore, viewers will just have to keep waiting to see what happens next for the beloved character.
NCIS season 18 is expected to return later in 2020.
