NCIS Los Angeles came to an early end this year due to the coronavirus pandemic as the CBS drama wasn’t able to finish filming its final few episodes prior to lockdown. But fear not, the show will be back for a 12th season as the network confirmed the return of all three of the NCIS series. So far, a release date has not been revealed.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from NCIS Los Angeles.

Owen Granger (played by Miguel Ferrer) was the Assistant Director at NCIS Los Angeles.

He had been the second-in-command behind Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt) since the third series.

At first, fans were unsure whether or not to trust him and there were a number of conspiracy theories suggesting he was actually a mole plotting against the OSP (Office of Special Projects).

However, over time, viewers realised it was the complete opposite as he put his neck on the line on more than one occasion.

What happened to Granger in NCIS Los Angeles?

In season eight, Granger was the victim of many attacks while working for NCIS.

In Crazy Train, fans learned Granger had been diagnosed with terminal cancer shortly after being forced to inhale Agent Orange, a dangerous chemical often used in warfare, particularly the Vietnam War.

He was then stabbed in Hot Water and barely escaped from a life-threatening terrorist attack from a female assassin in Payback who tried to sneak poison into his IV drip.

But everything got too much for him and he knew it was his time to go.

In season eight, episode 16 Old Tricks, Granger was in hospital after being stabbed.

When he was alone, he took out his IV drip and walked out of the ER and was never seen again.

Hetty went to pay him a visit but found he was gone and just a note was left.

In his message, Granger thanked Hetty but said he had taken enough bullets for one lifetime and told her to say goodbye to the team on his behalf.

While it was not stated, the show heavily implies Granger had died as he was terminally ill.

In Golden Days, Hetty and some of his comrades from the Vietnam War days raised a glass in his memory.

Unfortunately, actor Miguel Ferrer who played Granger died in real life on January 17, 2017 and this was the reason why he was written out of the show.

Fans would have noticed how Ferrer’s voice changed in the last few episodes he appeared in the show.

This was because he had head and throat cancer which he died of just a few weeks before his final episode premiered in 2017.

He was also expected to appear in the revival of Twin Peaks and animated series Stretch Armstrong and The Flex Fighters prior to his death.

Co-creator of Twin Peaks Mark Frost tweeted: “A death in the family: just learned we lost Miguel Ferrer today.

“Join me pls in sending sympathy to his wife and family.”

At the time, cousin and actor George Clooney said in a statement: “Today history will mark giant changes in our world, and lost to most will be that on the same day Miguel Ferrer lost his battle to throat cancer.

“But not lost to his family. Miguel made the world brighter and funnier and his passing is felt so deeply in our family that events of the day (monumental events) pale in comparison. We love you Miguel. We always will.”

NCIS is available to watch on CBS.
