Narcos Mexico: ONE major historical inaccuracy from the Netflix series – did you spot it?

Narcos and its spin-off series Narcos: Mexico has gripped Netflix subscribers for almost five years now. The drama surrounding the Guadalajara Cartel and the evil Félix Gallardo (played by Diego Luna) returns for season two in the Mexican spin-off soon as it continues to bring to life the real events from the 1980s drug scene. While both series are based on true events, some eagle-eyed fans managed to spot a glaring historical blunder in Narcos: Mexico.

In all 10 episodes of the first season of Narcos: Mexico, gunfights and bloodshed were aplenty.

As the Guadalajara Cartel rose to prominence in the 1980s, their leader Gallardo did whatever it took to gain power.

This evil behaviour is what led to the death of DEA agent Kiki Camerena (Michael Peña) by the end of the first season.

However, amidst all of the shooting, fighting and torture, a historical blunder occurred.

The mistake and historical inaccuracy from Narcos: Mexico stems from the guns that were used.

In a number of shoot-outs, characters, particularly the police, are seen using M16A1 rifles.

This is all fine but a few times, some of the characters were equipped with M4A1 Carbines.

Eagle-eyed fans and history buffs will be aware that this couldn’t have possibly happened in real life.

That’s because M4 didn’t go into service until 1994 at the earliest.

With Narcos: Mexico being set in the early ’80s, none of the characters would have been able to get their hands on the guns.

Therefore, none of the shoot-outs would’ve occurred with bullets shot from M4 Carbines.

It isn’t the only time in the series that history has been tweaked for the screen.

Sofia Conesa (Tessa Ia) for example, never actually existed.

Instead, the real-life person she’s based upon was called Sara Cosio.

Whether the second season stays true to the history as well will be determined when their series returns.

Details on season two are scarce but fans do know that Scoot McNairy will make a comeback.

McNairy’s character Walt Breslin was revealed to be the narrator at the end of season one.

He’ll undoubtedly seek vengeance for Kiki’s death, setting up a tantalising second season.
