Nancy Pelosi on Trump Impeachment Inquiry: ‘No One Is Above the Law’
Hours after the House of Representatives voted to approve a resolution formalizing the procedures of the impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited the Late Show to talk about the process and what’s next.
“This is truly a historic day, thank you for making time to be on our silly show,” Stephen Colbert said before Pelosi thanked the late-night host for his patriotism.
“This is a sad thing for our country. We do this prayerfully, with great seriousness,” Pelosi said. “The patriotism, the Constitution is really what impeachment is about.”
Pelosi then provided viewers with an explainer on what the results of Thursday’s vote means: Trump is not yet impeached, but Congress will “spell out the president’s rights, due process for him… it’s about fairness.”
“How we go forward is a test for us to do so worthy of the Constitution,” Pelosi said. “No one is above the law. President of the United States or not.”
During the 20-minute Late Show conversation, Pelosi reiterated that she “not been enthusiastic” about the prospects of impeachment — “He’s not worth impeaching,” she said — but after hearing the contents of the Ukraine phone calls, she said that “this was something you could not ignore.”
“In one conversation, he undermined our national security to the benefit of the Russians,” Pelosi said. “He jeopardized the integrity of our elections, the heart of our democracy, and by doing so, in my view, he possibly violated his oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Pelosi said that public hearings would start “soon,” and that she was ready for Trump to attack. “This is not for the faint of heart,” Pelosi told Colbert. “If you want to go in the arena, you’ve got to be able to take a punch. But you’ve also got to be willing to throw a punch.”
Pelosi later discussed Mitch McConnell, who she called the “Grim Reaper” of congressional legislation.
