Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's bombshell Oprah interview attracted a whopping 12million viewers making it the biggest TV show of the year.

Commenting on a tweet from Variety, ITV's head of home news Matt Williams wrote: "Over 11 million people watched the Oprah interview with Meghan and Harry on ITV last night. There was a peak of over 12 million".

Chris Ship said the ITV special drew in 12.3m viewers at its peak, though the average was 11m.

It got a 54% share of television audiences during its time slot.

It appears interest in the couple is still high despite them leaving the UK, though their wedding drew in a peak audience of 27.7m in the UK.

Boris Johnson's statement to the nation on January 4 had 15.6million viewers, however the Meghan interview has become the biggest television show with 12million.

During the interview, which first aired in the US on CBS on Sunday night, Meghan made a number of statements about her time as a member of the royal family.

One particular comment revealed that Prince Harry had been asked about the skin colour of their unborn child, before Archie was born.
