Meet Bake Off 2019's David Atherton – health adviser from London hoping to impress Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith

THE Great British Bake Off is officially in its second week with season 10, and David Atherton is competing with a number of talented bakers.

Here is what you need to know about the amateur baker and Bake Off 2019.

Who is The Great British Bake Off 2019 contestant David?

David Atherton was brought up in Yorkshire, where his mother, who was an avid baker, inspired him to take up baking.

The 36-year-old continued to explore his pastries making abilities when he travelled to Malawi, among other places, as part of his work as a health adviser.

In Malawi, he learned to build an oven out of an oil drum and invented a cake that could steam cook over a village fire.

David specialises in bread making and is not a fan of colourful icing but prefers robust flavours and good, solid bakes.

What has happened to David on Bake Off so far?

• Week Two, Biscuits – His "messy" Coco-Nutty chocolate bars were still praised for the flavours, but it was his Wedding Spray sculpture that really had the judges gushing.
• Week Three, Bread – The fashion designer was eliminated during Bread Week as she struggled to shine with her Tear and Share Bread, made the worst Soft Baps with burgers and her scored bread Showstopper.

What has David said about The Great British Bake Off 2019?

The keen baker is a long-time fan of the Channel 4 show and has watched it since its inauguration in 2010.

He admitted to questioning his ability to perform on the programme when he was accepted as a contestant.

David said: “When I got accepted it was such a mixture of emotions.  Then I thought, this is really crazy, am I good enough, will I have enough time to practice?”

The avid traveller went on to joke that the contestants on the show are treated like “royalty walking into the tent”.

When did The Great British Bake Off 2019 start?

The Great British Bake Off returned on August 27, 2019.

The new series kicked off on Channel 4 at 8pm until 9.30pm, much like the 2018 series which started on August 28.

Bake Off is expected to run for 10 consecutive weeks and the final is likely to be in November 2019.

What is the Great British Bake Off prize?

With all the drama, sweat and tears that the dedicated bakers go through, you would expect they would be aiming for some grand cash prize, but the answer is no.

The winning prize is just flowers and a cake stand, at least that's what has happened so far.

Previous Bake Off contestant Martha Collison, who reached the quarter-finals in the 2014 series, confirmed to Barrelhouse: “Everyone is so surprised and thinks there must be some secret cash, but all we really get is a bunch of flowers and a cake stand.

“But then, you also kind of become a national treasure just by doing it because everyone in Britain loves the Bake Off so much.”
