Marvel's Loki TV Spin-Off Star Teases Show's Direction

Loki is one of several new Marvel shows in the works that will make its debut on Disney+. While previous Marvel series have only been loosely connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (if at all), the upcoming Disney+ shows will all be major parts of the MCU, featuring high-profile stars from the films. One of these is the Thor spin-off series Loki, and now co-star has Gugu Mbatha-Raw hinted at what to expect when it arrives.

Speaking to ET Online, Mbatha-Raw didn’t reveal who she will be playing in Loki, but was able to talk about the show’s overall direction. “It goes to other places and you get to see [Loki] mature in a different way,” she said. “It’s going to be exciting for the fans to really see Tom [Hiddlestone] and that character take the center of the story.”

Mbatha-Raw also spoke in more detail about working with director Kate Herron, who has helmed all six episodes of Loki. This is unusual for a modern TV show, where seasons are usually divided up between multiple directors. “More than anything I was excited that it was being directed by one director,” she said “To be a part of a limited series [that’s] not just like episodic television, where you have a different director every week. Kate really was going to direct all of the episodes, which I’ve never had that experience on TV. I know it’s obviously been done, but personally I’ve not had the experience of doing several episodes with the same director.”

As well as Mbatha-Raw, Loki added several other high profile names to the cast earlier this year, including Owen Wilson and Richard E. Grant. But like virtually all shows being made in 2020, production was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The series was originally set for Spring 2021 release, but it’s currently unknown if it will still arrive then.

Other upcoming Marvel Disney+ shows include WandaVision, which will star Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olson as Vision and the Scarlet Witch, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Earlier this month, it was reported that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will no longer be released in August as originally scheduled.
