Marvel Fans Still Shouldn't Expect to See Daredevil In the MCU Anytime Soon

When it comes to former Fox/Marvel heroes coming into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the talk tends to revolve around The X-Men and The Fantastic Four, both of which turned into franchises. But there’s another Fox/Marvel hero who doesn’t tend to get talked up as much: Daredevil. 

That may seem odd considering the Daredevil series on Netflix was the most popular incarnation of the blind superhero. However, we probably won’t see him again for a while yet, mainly because Marvel has so much on its plate. 

What other Daredevils have there been? 

The comic book character made his debut in 1964, not long after Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four came along. When Matt Murdock was a young boy, he was blinded in an accident when he tried to save someone and was hit in the face with radioactive material.

Although he could no longer see, the radioactivity heightened his other senses. 

Although popular in the comics, Daredevil had trouble reaching either the big or small screen in live-action. It wasn’t until 1989 that he finally appeared as the guest hero in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk. He finally got his movie debut in 2003, with Ben Affleck playing the hero.

It did decent business, but it’s not remembered particularly well now. An Elektra spinoff movie with Jennifer Garner made even less of a dent. 

It all finally came together with the well-reviewed Netflix series starring Charlie Cox that made its debut in 2015, scoring particular praise for a fight scene that played out as one long take. The show, like all the other Marvel/Netflix shows, ran its course, with Daredevil stopping after three seasons, the same number Jessica Jones had. 

Marvel can’t do anything with Daredevil until late 2020

Marvel fans were frustrated that Daredevil and other shows like The Runaways all fell by the wayside while Disney was ramping up shows featuring heroes already in the MCU. However, a forum on Reddit notes that after Daredevil was canceled, an agreement stipulated another new show couldn’t be developed until November 2020. So will it happen?

It seems unlikely that we’ll get anything Daredevil-related until at least 2022. Marvel’s slate is already packed, with two movies and TV shows coming this year with Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and The Eternals. The following year is even more crowded, with Loki, Shang-Chi, What If …?, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder. 

How soon Daredevil could reappear after that is difficult to say. When it comes to the former Fox characters, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool all seem to be much higher priorities.

As well-liked as the Netflix show was, Daredevil doesn’t have great pop-culture pull, with memories of the movies being faded at best. 

Will Daredevil get a movie or a Disney+ show? 

According to Digital Spy, Kevin Feige was asked if Daredevil and the other Netflix characters would be brought into the MCU. His reply was telling in that it didn’t tell much. 

“I don’t know,” he told BET. “There were a lot of great characters that were on those Netflix series, and I think there is a period of time… it’ll be a while before we could use any of them based on what the contracts were, so I’m not sure. And also, even answering that question is a spoiler. But there are some great Marvel characters there.”

Since Feige mentioned a spoiler was in play, that sounds like Daredevil might at least be considered for a return. But what form should that take? A movie or a TV show? And would fans accept if it starred someone other than Charlie Cox? 

As things stand, Marvel seems to be concentrating its movies more on interstellar characters like The Eternals, Thor, and Doctor Strange. Daredevil doesn’t comfortably fit into that mold, but it’s evident by now that Marvel could blindside fans with a surprise or two it may have up its sleeves.
