Mariah Carey felt ‘uncomfortable’ during Ellen DeGeneres interview
Mariah Carey has recalled how she felt ‘extremely uncomfortable’ during a past interview with Ellen DeGeneres in which the talk show host badgered her to confirm she was pregnant.
In 2008, Mariah appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show amid speculation she was expecting a baby with then-husband Nick Cannon.
During the interview, Mariah stated that she ‘didn’t want to discuss’ the rumours but Ellen then presented her with champagne so they could ‘toast’ to her not being pregnant.
When Ellen noticed that the Grammy-winning singer pretended to sip the alcohol, she exclaimed: ‘You are pregnant!’
Mariah, 50, was indeed expecting a baby but she sadly miscarried shortly after.
Reflecting on the interview now, Mariah told Vulture: ‘I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath.’
Explaining why she was reluctant to share the news on the Ellen show, Mariah added: ‘I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage.’

She then referred to the scrutiny currently surrounding Ellen and stated: ‘I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.’
‘[There’s] an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do? It’s like, [sings] “What are you going to do?”’ Mariah added.
Of course, Mariah went on to welcome twins Moroccan and Monroe, now nine, with ex-husband Nick in 2011.
A source close to the Ellen show noted to Metro.co.uk that Mariah did appear on the show five times after her 2008 appearance.
These were in 2009 to promote Precious, in 2010, twice in 2015 and again in 2016 to promote her reality TV show.
Mariah’s comments come in the middle of a storm of controversy for Ellen, whose show has been accused of having a toxic environment behind the scenes.
Several former employees have come forward to accuse producers and other members of staff of ‘intimidation’ and ‘racism’.
The backlash against Ellen, 62, began when Buzzfeed News reported that former employees had told them that they had experienced ‘intimidating behaviour’.
After the recent allegations came to light, presenter Ellen penned an apology, where she said she takes ‘full responsibility’ for the working environment, as her name is the brand.
She claimed she had no idea what had gone on behind-the-scenes and is now working with WarnerMedia to get rid of the ‘toxic’ environment.
