Line of Duty writer Jed Mercurio mulling over whether to bring back cop series and other blockbuster drama The Bodyguard

LINE of Duty writer Jed Mercurio is currently mulling over whether to bring back the cop series and his other blockbuster drama The Bodyguard.

The BBC would certainly be up for a comeback, but they won’t be piling any pressure on Jed.

Drama chief Piers Wenger said: “Of course, we're all massive fans of the show – we'd like to see both of them return.

“Jed is thinking [about it] but I can't really say much more than that.

“He hasn't committed to writing either of them.”

Piers was talking as he unveiled new Beeb dramas including This is Going to Hurt, an adaptation of Adam Kay's best-selling book about being a junior doctor; The Girl Before with Ben Harding and Jessica Plummer and Chloe starring Erin Doherty who played Princess Anne in the last series of The Crown.

He says it’s likely Jed would only seriously consider further instalments if filming restrictions, triggered by Covid, were seriously relaxed.

Piers added: “I think if he were to do them he'd like to do it when Covid wasn't a thing because that production (LOD) was particularly impacted in the making of series six.”

Many viewers were left disappointed by the outcome of the last series earlier this year, when the identity of ‘H’ was finally unmasked.

Speaking last week, lead star Martin Compston, who plays DSI Stephen Arnott, says the cop drama will only return “for the right reasons” and Jed would never write another series “just for the sake of it.”

He said: “People want us to come back and that’s amazing. But Jed will only come back and do more if he believes there is a story to tell.

“He won’t come back just because we’re getting bigger. He wouldn’t do another series just for the sake of it. He writes everything for a reason.”
