Kevin Hart Announces His First Netflix Standup Special After Oscars Controversy: 'I Can't Wait'

Kevin Hart is taking his standup to the small screen.

The comedian’s first original Netflix standup special, Kevin Hart: Irresponsible, is hitting screens globally April 2, he announced Monday.

“Mark your calendars damn it. My Comedy special will be dropping on April 2nd on Netflix. I can’t wait….Let’s gooooooo #Irresponsible#ComedicRockStarS–t #Netflix,” Hart, 39, wrote on Instagram.

His post also included a brief teaser trailer that featured him standing in a red spotlight that eventually zooms out and into Netflix’s signature “N.”

The hour-long special was filmed in front of a 15,000-person crowd at the O2 Arena in London as part of Hart’s tour of the same name.

“Hart touches upon his friends, family, travel…and a year filled with Irresponsible behavior,” a press release reads.

Though Irresponsible marks Hart’s first original standup special for the streaming service, he has released content on the platform before, including Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History, which came out in February.

The special follows a tumultuous few months for the comic, in which he was hired to host the Oscars, then stepped down from the gig while apologizing for past homophobic tweets.

Despite some chatter that he might possibly return to the stage, Hart definitively said in January he would not be hosting the show, which ultimately aired Feb. 24 without a host.

“I don’t want people to think there’s a thing between me and the Academy, because there isn’t. The Academy, they’re amazing people, the offer was made, it was received, I was excited, things happened, it didn’t work out the way that it should’ve,” he said during an appearance on Good Morning America. “Right now, from a time perspective, I don’t have the time [to return as host]… It’s not going to happen. In the future, if it does, it does.”

Hart’s Netflix special follows in the footsteps of other comics taking their material to the platform, including Amy Schumer, whose next special will debut March 19, and Ellen DeGeneres, whose first standup special in 15 years hit Netflix in December.
