Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard were all of us as they watched the new John Lewis Christmas advert, getting teary live on air over the emotional clip.

The advert features a teen love story with a space traveller named Skye, who has never celebrated Christmas, crash-landing in the woods near the home of 14-year-old Nathan at the height of merriment.

Set to the soundtrack of a celestial version of Together In Electric Dreams, it hit Good Morning Britain hosts Kate and Ben particularly hard.

‘We’re all pretty close to the edge here in the studio,’ Ben, 46, admitted as cameras cut back to a very teary-eyed team in the studio.

‘All sorts of overtones of loss and departure and gifting and loving,’ Kate, 54, added.

Kate has had a particularly difficult year amid her husband Derek Draper’s Covid-19 battle. While he returned home from hospital in April this year, he suffered organ damage.

Kate recently opened up about the family’s Christmas plans and said she is trying to get Derek to see his side of the family to celebrate the day.

The new John Lewis advert, which has been released 10 days earlier than in past years, follows Skye and Nathan as they enjoy the space traveller’s first Christmas.

Sadly though, Skye can’t stay on planet earth and the advert ends with the pair sharing a kiss before she jumps back in her rocket to go home, leaving a twinkling star on a Christmas tree in the distance.

The soundtrack is provided by singer and songwriter Lola Young, a 20-year-old up-and-coming star, who’s being tipped as the UK’s next biggest artist.

The South London singer has been described as ‘fiercely independent and exceptionally talented’ and has recently appeared on James Corden’s Late Late Show.

‘There is nothing more magical than discovering the joy of Christmas for the first time and enjoying your favourite festive moments with loved ones,’ John Lewis customer director Claire Pointon said.

‘After the last 18 months, we wanted our advert to really celebrate this as we look forward to a brighter future.

‘We know our customers are excited for this festive season more than ever, as they reconnect with family and friends. Through the story of Skye and Nathan we celebrate friendship and are reminded of the joy of experiencing Christmas for the first time.’

It will air on TV for the first time during the Pride of Britain Awards at 8:15pm on ITV.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
