Kate Garraway addresses future on GMB as husband Derek remains in critical condition

Kate Garraway announced she would be back presenting Good Morning Britain alongside Ben Shephard next Monday after three months away from the show. The presenter explained she has been told by doctors to continue with her life as husband Derek continues his recovery.

She said: “I’m going to come back I’m afraid. I’m going to come back on Monday if you have me

“I don’t know if I have the fight to be a Piers Morgan but I’m going to be back with Ben Shephard.”

Kate added: “The doctors have said you’ve got to get on.”

Speaking of her children’s reaction to her return to Good Morning Britain, the mother-of-two explained: “Well, Darcey said, ‘Does that mean I have to go to bed early as well?’

“I said you don’t have to go to bed as early as me but you can’t wake me up.”

Earlier in the interview with Piers and Susanna, Kate explained it was a “miracle” her husband is still alive.

She detailed: “The doctors do keep saying it’s a miracle he’s still alive.

“I was speaking to someone yesterday and they said he is sick as anyone I’ve ever seen in 35 years of medicine.

“Some of those who were as sick as them.”

Kate went on to add she was told six times he was not going to make it and to prepare to say her final words to her husband.

The announcement comes after Kate revealed Derek has started to emerge from a deep coma and had “opened his eyes”.

Speaking at the weekend, she told Hello! magazine: “When medical staff say: ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes.

“We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.

“The children and I communicate with him every day on FaceTime, while a nurse holds his iPad.”

Kate revealed she has been told by doctors to return to work to provide structure and a routine for their children Darcey and Billy.

She told Hello! magazine: “I have to get on with life whilst we are waiting for him to get better.

“They’ve told me that I need to go back to work and create a routine in our lives again.

“The children and Derek are all I’ve thought about and they’re the most important people in my life, but I must create structure and normality for the children.”
