Jodie Comer Could Step Into a Famous Charlize Theron Role Following 'Killing Eve'

After the massive success of Killing Eve, Jodie Comer is undoubtedly going to be one of the biggest names in entertainment in the next couple of years. She’s already won a BAFTA and an Emmy, and Season 3 might have been some of her best work yet. She has a couple of projects coming up, but there’s a rumor that she might score a major film role that Charlize Theron once had.

Jodie Comer is a frontrunner to play a young Furiosa in a ‘Mad Max’ prequel

After the success of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, George Miller is planning on creating more. The first film in the series started in 1979 with Mel Gibson in the role that Tom Hardy most recently played. And Charlize Theron’s Furiosa made her debut. Now, rumors are circulating that Comer is in the lead to play a younger version of Theron’s role.

The prequel tells the elaborate backstory of Furiosa, which is mentioned in the movie a little bit. Even before Fury Road came out, Miller had written a whole screenplay regarding her origin, which he told the New York Times was “purely a way of helping Charlize and explaining it to ourselves.” But after fans’ reaction and love for Theron’s Furiosa, the prequel film found its footing.

First reports stated that Anya Taylor-Joy was going to play the role of Furiosa, but now Comer’s name is being put in the ring as well. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Comer is now the one being eyed for a young Furiosa. With her current role as Villanelle, it’s easy to see how Comer could play a young woman warrior a part of the Vuvalini. Comer plays demur and sweet when she wants to, and then pulls out the big guns with her legendary fight scenes and vicious serial killer moves.

The ‘Mad Max’ prequel is in development after some struggles

Screenrant reported in 2018 that there was a lawsuit between George Miller, the creator of the series, and Warner Bros. due to discrepancies over the contract and supposed millions owed to Miller. Despite that lawsuit, Miller had written two or more scripts in addition to Mad Max: Fury Road in the decade it took to get that movie created. While there are also plans for sequels, the prequel seems to be the one to happen next.

Originally Miller was going to have Theron reprise her role and use de-aging technology seen in The Irishman. But Miller told the New York Times that it was a bit too “uncanny valley” and he didn’t want to go that route anymore.

Due to coronavirus (COVID-19) shutdowns in Hollywood, the prequel is set to start filming in 2021, according to Variety. Considering Killing Eve will probably film next year, at some point, too, it might still be up in the air.

What does Comer have coming up?

Season 4 of Killing Eve is currently being worked on, so fans can get excited for that at some point in 2021. Season 3 ended so well, that it’ll be a hard wait, but the payoff should be good.

Comer already filmed Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds, and that release was pushed back until December. It’s about the inside of a video game that’s kind of a mix of Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto. Comer plays Milly, one of the developers, along with Molotov Girl inside the game.

The BBC reboot of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads is another limited series Comer will be in. Each episode is a monologue, and Comer’s is “Her Big Chance” where she plays Lesley, is an aspiring actress who thinks she’s about to get her big break, but misunderstands the role. It sounds like they were filming right before the shutdowns, but they might not have finished.

Lastly, Comer is co-starring in The Last Duel with Matt Damon and Adam Driver. She’ll play Damon’s character’s wife, Marguerite, who’s raped by Adam Driver’s character. The two have to duel to the death to prove if she’s charged with a false accusation or not.

Whether Comer gets the role of Furiosa or not, she’ll definitely be a face you’ll see more of in the future.
