Jeremy Vine Show slammed by Rebekah Vardy’s friend for airing trolls’ cruel tweets

Jeremy Vine delved into the ongoing WAG drama this morning, which saw Coleen Rooney post a statement on her Twitter account claiming Rebekah’s Instagram account leaked stories about her to the press. Rebekah hit back at the claims on her on her own account and today, Nicola McLean defended her to Jeremy Vine. But during the conversation she went on to slam the show for sharing memes about the row.

Nicola began: “I don’t know Coleen but I do know Rebekah, and what she’s going through is really what nobody should have to go through so publicly.

“I mean, she is having, she has got people saying they hope her baby dies inside her – she’s seven months pregnant.

“She has had to take her daughter out of school. I have never ever seen, in the whole time I have been in this industry, I have never seen social media and media backlash for someone.”

She went on to say Rebekah has denied the claim, and she has also “taken legal action”.

After a long discussion on whether Coleen Rooney was right in calling her out on Twitter, Jeremy invited co-host Storm Huntley to read out some tweets on the topic mocking the row.

One of the tweets called Coleen “Wagatha Christie,” after the great detective Agatha Christie.

While there was a murmur of humour around the tweet, Nicola wasn’t happy.

Upon being asked why she wasn’t amused, Nicola replied: “Do you know why I’m not amused? I think we’re all so hypocritical and – including you guys for putting them up, I’ve just gotta be honest.

“Because I think we’re quick to sit here and [talk about] social media, the bullying, it’s horrendous, they’re having such bad anxiety with it.

“And then I’ve just said to you Rebekah is seven months pregnant she cannot stop crying, she’s had to take her kids out of school, she’s had to come back from her holiday – I know everybody is going to say how lucky is she she gets a holiday, but it’s still a fact she’s had to interrupt her holiday – she’s devastated.

“She doesn’t see the funny side of it, but we’re all sitting here laughing about it.”

Nicola went on to defend Rebekah even further by adding: “Until it’s proven that it was Rebekah I don’t think a pregnant woman should be hounded the way she is.”

Jeremy chimed in to agree, saying: “Absolutely not.”

Following Coleen’s post on Twitter yesterday, Rebekah quickly replied with her own statement.

She wrote: “As I have just said to you on the phone, I wish you had called me if you thought this.

“I never to speak to anyone about you as various journalists who have asked to over the years can vouch for.

“If you thought this was happening you could have just told me and I could have changed my passwords to see if it stopped.

Rebekah continued: “Over the years various people have had access to my Insta & just this week I found I was following people I didn’t know and have never followed myself. I’m not being funny but I don’t need the money, what would I gain from selling stories on you?

“I liked you a lot Coleen and I’m so upset that you have chosen to do this, especially when I’m heavily pregnant. I’m disgusted that I’m even having to deny this. You should have called me the first time this happened.”

The Jeremy Vine Show airs weekdays at 9.15am on Channel 5.
