Why was Jane the Virgin cancelled on The CW?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Jane the Virgin
Jane the Virgin has been one of The CW’s most popular series since it begun in 2014.
The series finished airing earlier this year after 100 episodes on the channel.
Season five was the final outing of the series which followed the escapades of Jane Villanueva (played by Gina Rodriguez) and her family.
While many praised the final episode of the series, some viewers were left wondering why the series was cancelled.

When The CW announced the fifth season of the show back in April 2018, it also confirmed it would be the last.
The network did not give a reason for its ending when it announced the news.
However, the announcement was not a surprise after Rodriguez let the news slip in an interview at an event in Austin, Texas back in 2018.
She referred to the series as the final season at the March event, speaking about it as “the most incredible experience,” according to Variety.
The show finished airing with a finale episode on July 31 2019.
The series ended with Jane and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) getting married as well as her selling a novel of her life for an estimated £386,000 ($500,000).
Petra Solano (played by Yael Grobglas) also got a happy ending after she reunited with her ex-girlfriend JR (Rosario Dawson).
The final reveal unveiled Jane and Rafael’s son Mateo (Elias Janssen) as the narrator of the series.
Creator Jennie Snyder Urman spoke to The Hollywood Reporter after it ended about how she always planned the series to end without any cliffhangers.

She told the publication: “That is built into the DNA of telenovelas. They’re always built with an ending, and the ending is usually a wedding.
“All of that was important to me — that they’re not conceived as shows that go on forever, that there’s an ending that you’re building to.”
Some fans were hopeful the story would continue with rumours of spin-off series earlier this year.
This included one called Jane the Novela, which was also set to air on The CW.
However, TV Line confirmed in May this year the series would not be picked up by the network.
The series was supposed to be a telenova-inspired anthology series based on Jane’s novels.
Speaking about the future of Jane the Virgin, creator Urman added that she was happy with the spin-off but was also pleased to bring the series to an end.
She added: “I was happy with it, and I was really proud of it.
“I felt like if that doesn’t work then the nice, other side of that is putting Jane to bed and really letting the ending sit, and letting it exist as a whole thing and not letting it continue on.
“I’ve found that silver lining — that it allows Jane to have its own ending and you never know what’s around the corner. But right now I have no plans to [continue].”
Jane the Virgin is available to stream on Netflix.
